From experience, trying to have dozens of different implementations, one for each
"special case", ends up in an unmanageable mess. With the approach we have
taken, everything uses the same mechanism, and for the vast majority it "just
works", and when it doesn't it's most of the times because of pre-existing
hidden issues that are brought to light - which is a good thing, as then they can be fixed
(eg: variables leaking into pkg-config-like executables).
