#76: Provide mailto reply links ------------------------+-------------------------- Reporter: iankelling | Owner: Type: enhancement | Status: new Priority: major | Milestone: Beta version Version: | Keywords: ------------------------+-------------------------- I often end up at a list archive message and it is my first association with the list, and I want to reply. pipermail provides a very convenient mailto link to reply a message. I click the link and I'm in my email client replying. One click simplicity. I tried out the hyperkitty demo, and see that I can't reply without logging in. That is a regression in usability.
Once I've logged in, I still don't get a mailto link, so I can't use my email client, and do all the things my email client allows. The first of which would be using a different email address than is associated with my fedora account. And there appears to be no list archive download, so there is no workaround. I'm forced to use a forum type software to reply to a mailing list. This is a major regression in functionality.

I quite strongly disagree with this. I would agree if HyperKitty was meant to be a drop-in replacement of pipermail but it is not. HyperKitty provides a completely different way of browsing and interacting with archives. So no, it's not a regresion.
However one could consider your demands as valid RFE.

A mailing list supports interacting with it via an email client. Hypermail provides a web interface to interact. But people are still going to use email clients, and it will feel like a regression in functionality to users to not be able to use their email clients. I've changed the title to RFE.

Hey Ian, I think there's a bit of misunderstanding here, mailman3 is still completely functional without !HyperKitty, its web archiving interface. You can use your email client if you prefer, and that's not going to change. Regarding the mailto links, the idea is to avoid email harvesting by spammers. If you want to reply with a particular address, just login to !HyperKitty with this address (using the Persona/BrowserID option) and it will work as you expect. Contrary to what you'd have with a mailto link, replying via !HyperKitty will preserve the "Reply-To" headers and thus not break the thread. The idea behind !HyperKitty is to allow email client users and webforum users to speak to each other via the list, and keep their preferred interface. As far as the "download list archive" feature, it's not in yet but it's planned (it's a bit harder to do properly if we want to be scalable). Thanks for opening this RFE.

I don't think there is on my side.

spammers.
It is not necessary to abandon mailto links to achieve this. Some pipermail instances are configured to contain individual author's email addresses in the mailto links, and some do not. For example mediawiki mailing lists do not. Their mailto links reply only to the list with headers to not break the thread afaik. An example message and the mailto link it provides: http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/mediawiki-l/2013-December/042232.html, mailto:mediawiki-l%40lists.wikimedia.org?Subject=Re%3A%20%5BMediaWiki-l%5D%20Translation%20Services%20do%20not%20start%3A%20now%20microsoft &In-Reply-To=%3C987A1562E74BC443B3C4D4A8F7EA658E2909196D%40AZ- FFEXMB04.global.avaya.com%3E.
If you want to reply with a particular address, just login to HyperKitty
with this address (using the Persona/BrowserID option) and it will work as you expect. Yes, I was aware it was possible, I was just pointing out that it was much harder to do than with my email client.
The idea behind HyperKitty is to allow email client users and webforum
users to speak to each other via the list, and keep their preferred interface. This is great, but it not being achieved yet because email client users can't reply to messages in the archive using their email client. This RFE is aimed at fixing that.

OK, I think I understand now. I've changed the code to create a mailto link when browsing anonymously, and added a link to reply using email software when logged in. This has been done in commit c9f469a4, and will be deployed with the next rebuild. Thanks for suggesting this and giving examples.
