--- Comment #5 from Pravin Satpute <psatpute(a)redhat.com> ---
(In reply to Nadav Har'El from comment #4)
Yes, I'm a Hebrew speaker, and have LC_CTYPE=he_IL (not LANG -
LC_CTYPE).
However, I'd like to point out that:
1. Culmus fonts have a few "general" Hebrew fonts (most importantly David
for serif) but also a lot of "specialized" fonts (e.g., for bible-like
typesetting). It makes sense for "David" to be chosen when "serif"
is
requested, but it does not make sense to choose a random Culmus font - it
will never be the right choice.
Point well taken. I will change the priority for other fonts. David will be
given higher priority.
2. The Culmus fonts are designed for Hebrew text only. I think they do have
English glyphs, but they should NOT be used for English-only pages. It is
silly to assume because LC_CTYPE=he_IL that all viewed pages are in Hebrew.
I don't know what can be done about this, though :-(
Same problem we are facing in other locales as well.
May be we can add some fontconfig rules and ask to select Latin fonts for Latin
text.
P.S. I think (but am not sure) that the page's encoding also makes a
difference. If the page specifically says it uses a non-Hebrew encoding
(e.g., iso-8859-1), I think (but am not sure) the irrelevant Hebrew fonts
are not used.
Dont think, we can do much here.
