It's not a bad idea, but TBH, I still want to stay away from Wayland.
While a lot of the packages of interest are not really shared, the general similarity would allow us to save a lot of time when it comes to QA and the creation of a spin. Maybe we should merge into the tilling window manager SIG? (with a better name of course).
Well, we can join effort for packaging but produce different Spins, why not? wdyt?
It's nice to see more interest in i3! But I'm not sure that joining efforts is such a good idea. While sway and i3 may be very similar from a user perspective, they are not from a packager's perspective. Also, while you don't really care about sway, I don't have much interest in i3. So what exactly would a joined SIG do? All the work would be either towards i3 or sway, I don't see any synergetic effects of a joint SIG.
The main synergy would be the potential creation of a sway Fedora spin as the QA effort could be mostly shared. Besides that, there is a small overlap of a few applications that work both on Wayland and Xorg like alacritty. But the main synergy would be imho a in a sway spin, if that is something we want tackle.
Just an idea here,
What if we can offer a "Tiling Window Manager Spin" (we can come up with a better name) and then let the user choose X11 or Wayland?
Is that too much work?

I don't think that it would be too much work once we have the i3 spin, but it _is_ work that has to be done. There were proposals for a sway spin in the past, but we (= the sway SIG) didn't have the manpower to tackle that. Depending on how the i3 spin goes, this could change though.

Maybe we can get a discussion going on what needs to be done then to tackle something like this. I personally do no know the work involved but having a "tiling" spin that can support both X11 and Wayland would be amazing especially since the configs are compatible.
Let me know how I can help.

Hi Zach,
as the i3 SIG is planning to create a spin, we should be able to find out what is exactly required. My current guess is, that it mostly boils down to: 1. Compile a list of packages to be included 2. Create kickstart file and plug it into pungi 3. Ensure that the spin builds for each release and do some QA
I expect that 1. and 2. are mostly a one time thing, while 3. will require long term commitment (especially if the QA part is not automated).
Cheers,
Dan

Makes sense!
"Tiled Spin"
You choose between X11 & Wayland during installation. That decides the Windows Manager
