All these institutes depend on the commercial service
providers for the
bandwidth which is costly in spite of the discounts
Till such time ERNET is completely revived and made
stronger and is
properly connected with NIXI at all NIXI nodes this
bandwidth crisis for
the institutes shall continue.
The present approach can be to request service
providers like BSNL and
VSNL to provide some mirrors as they have hardware and
bandwidth in plenty.
IIT - Madras hosts a mirror for debian for public use.
May they can be
approached for fedora as well.

Usually educational institutions are good choices so if you are a
college student, do ask your management about this. A pitch on the
viability of learning with open code might work. Corporates might be

Hopefully you are all aware of the recent activities at WBUT.
After successful install-fests and establishing a public mirror
consisting of different Distros [Its up, details are coming once we
harden the box],
the WBUT-LUG is going to undertake another ambitious project which is
much like the Freedom Toaster project.
First we are going to place the machine at WBUT so that people can
come and burn
the distros they want. We also look forward to spread that to
Hereby we are calling for participation in the freedom toaster alike project.
People in and around kolkata is preferred , so that they
can come down personally, but they need not be WBUT students.
Please note its not going to be a replica of the freedom toaster
project. We shall write our own softwares and change the specs
according to our needs.[so that participants can spend a few sleepless
nights :). ]
We are also going to make our own kiosk, so we also need people who
can do mechanical engg jobs.
For any further quary or expression of interest, please post a message
to the list with your details. Alternately you can contact me or idg.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks and regards,

It gives me pleasure to say that the Fedora Project's application
to host a Project Day at FOSS.in 2007 has been accepted by the
However we now have to carry the burden of ensuring that we produce
many Indian contributors to Fedora in particular and FOSS in general.
This means that our sessions have to be structured in such a way that
it is easy for people to get in at the ground floor and the take the
elevator up. Or in other words we should have enough low hanging
fruits to encourage newer contributors.
We are looking for capable community members who are willing to step
up and help us achieve our objective.
A possible agenda and a probable list of workshops is now
being chalked out.
If you desire to participate -- give talks or hold workshops --
irrespective of whether they are present in or not, we would
encourage you to let us know what you have in mind. We want the agenda
and workshops to reflect the preferences of the community.
Please remember that our focus is on encouraging new contributors from
India, and not on addressing the end-users. However that will not
prohibit foreign nationals from giving talks or holding workshops as
long they help us in bootstrapping members of the audience into
So lets get the dice rolling...

Let us have a discussion on the hardware compatibility
with Fedora for
easily and locally available hardware in India.
We can take up specific cards, peripherals,
motherboard etc.....Let me
initiate with: -
1. Which are the wifi - 802.11a/b/g cards (PCI based)
with WPA support
that Fedora supports straight forward without
tweaking, which are
available easily and cheaply in India ?
2. Which are the wifi - 802.11a/b/g cards (PCI based)
with WPA support
that Fedora supports with tweaking, and again which
are available easily
and cheaply in India ?

Recently I gave a talk at the Nirma University which was attended by
around 100 students. On a whim, I asked the students if they used
Firefox and around 80 hands went up. For OpenOffice and Linux the
respective numbers were 20 and 10.
Later on, I asked the students if they were using Firefox because the
college had mandated it. Their answer was that they were using it
because they really liked it.
That set me thinking on what makes open source software really popular.
Is it when it crosses the chasm from being just "good enough" to "really
Just wanted to say Hi to you all. It feels great to be a part of Fedora
