Free Media: deeper nexus between ambassadors & mirror admins
by Debarshi Ray
I keep hearing and reading about the huge amount of open requests in
the Free Media program. I was wondering whether a deeper nexus between
the ambassadors and the mirror administrators would help to improve
the situation.
We can have an arrangement where after every stable release the
mirrors admins send snapshots of their mirrors to some "select"
ambassadors. These ambassadors can then re-distribute the content
further down the tree.
Most amabassadors are volunteers and may be bandwidth constrained. So
it might be cheaper to send a snapshot in 3-4 DVDs via snail mail than
having to do the equivalent amount of downloading. In case the media
request has originated from a place geograhically close to a mirror,
the ambassadors can simply redirect them to the relevant mirror
facility.
Someday one can extend this to the idea of getting seed content for
new mirrors from pre-existing ones.
Comments?
Cheers,
Debarshi

Why would anyone like to have a Fedora Mirror ?
by sankarshan
I was being generally unhappy with the Mirror Admins of the two external
Fedora Mirrors in India and we collectively stumbled upon the eureka
moment that we don't have straight answer to "why an university or any
academic institution with a reasonable connection would like to have a
Fedora Mirror, internally, if not externally"
Given the low number of torrent seeds and the increasing usage of
rawhide bits for the OS, it becomes important to [i] have more mirrors
[ii] more torrent seeds and [iii] more media via FreeMedia available.
mether would perhaps like to write about [iii] separately later. This
mail is more about the question - what would be a compelling reason for
an institution to have a Fedora mirror ?

Fwd: Help the Release Engineering Team!

Subject: Help the Release Engineering Team!
To: fedora-devel-list(a)redhat.com
Want to give the releng team a hand? Great! I've got a fun task for
you!
In our ramp up to release Fedora 9, many Fedora 9 blocker bugs have been
recently closed. The tracker for these bugs is at
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=235706 However since we're
in a freeze mode, there is no guarantee that "CLOSED->RAWHIDE" actually
means that a package build made it into rawhide. What we're looking for
is somebody to trace through the blocker bugs that have been closed
since April 8th and make sure that there:
A) a package build with the fix and
B) that build (or a later one) has been tagged with f9-final in koji.
For anything that doesn't meet one of those two requirements, either
re-open the bug and state such in the bug, or mail
rel-eng(a)fedoraproject.org with the details.
Your help will be much appreciated.
P.S. Coordinating somewhere like fedora-devel-list or on irc in
#fedora-devel might be useful to prevent multiple people from doing the
same work.

May we have a meeting?
by susmit shannigrahi
Hi,
Its long time since we, Indian ambassadors had a meeting.
Don't you think We are communicating very little?
What about fixing time/date and setting up agendas for a meeting?
What do you say?
Thanks.

Susmit.
