[in the news] Users howl as Fedora 12 gives root to unwashed masses
by susmit shannigrahi
"Fedora users are revolting against a change introduced in the latest
version of the operating system that allows the installation of
thousands of software titles without an administrative password.
Critics say the move diminishes the security of machines running the
open-source OS by giving unprivileged users what amounts to
administrative control. That could allow lower-level employees to
install software that's not been approved by administrators, or worse,
to gain root access by installing an application with a known security
vulnerability and then intentionally exploiting it."

There is no way to issue new official ISOs that does not create
extreme confusion and problems for many users as well. Users will
need to apply the update themselves, or use the documentation that's
been provided in the updated Release Notes to get the alternate
behavior they want.

An update will be issued. No plans to roll out new ISO images. If you
are not connected to the net, you don't have to worry about issue that
much, anyway.

Fwd from the announce list: PackageKit change
by Ankur Sinha
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
The Fedora 12 release contained changes in the default PackageKit
behavior that allow installation of packages by users in cases where:
* the user is logged in on the local console, and
* is installing packages signed with a previously trusted key, and
* is using a previously configured and trusted repository
After more discussion and thought, though, the package maintainers
have posted to the fedora-devel-list mailing list agreeing to provide
an update to Fedora 12's PackageKit. The update will require local
console users to enter the root password to install new software
packages. Details on the changes are found here:

F12 almost out: What are your plans for a release event??
by Ankur Sinha
hi,
I just checked up the Fedora Ambassadors India page. We have a
*staggering* 112 ambassadors !! :D
So, with F12 out in about 30 hours, I wanted to hold a meeting
@#fedora-india where hopefully *all* these ambassadors would get
together to discuss their plans for release events?
Such a meeting was already convened @#fedora-ambassadors for APAC[1]
(headed by David Ramsey). I was hoping for a meeting more India
specific.
Please decide a good time. People who'd like to head the meeting should
please raise their hands.
How's 21st Saturday or 22nd Sunday for everyone?
btw, do we have meetbot functioning on #fedora-india?
regards,
Ankur

A report on FOSS GN 09 event at Engineering College Bikaner(Rajasthan)
by shreekant bohra
Hello everyone
I am Shree Kant Bohra, a member of the team which organized a four day FOSS
event at Engineerng College Bikaner <http://www.ecb.ac.in> during 28-31st
October 2009. I would like to thank Fedora India Community for providing
guidance and goodies for the event and in particular I would like to thank
Rahul Sundaram, Sankarsan and Susmit who despite of lack of proper pre
planning of the event managed to provide us with total support. We had talk
on F12 features, SELinux and a Fedora Installfest during the FOSS event. We
have compiled a report of the event and would like to share it with others.
Please Download report from
here.<http://sakshama.org/documents/foss_gn09_report.pdf>

Ambassador self introduction
by Bhargav Prasanna
Hi all,
I've requested to become a Fedora Ambassador. A short introduction
about myself follows:
I'm Bhargav Prasanna. I'm doing my pre-final year in electrical and
electronics engineering at Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College,
Chennai.
I'm 19 years old and I've been using Fedora since sulphur.
The other operating systems I use extensively include Arch Linux and Debian.
I've been involved in small scale conversion (if that is what you can
call it) of people including my classmates, batchmates, juniors and
other friends from proprietary OSs to F/OSS OSs which mainly include
Fedora, and (K)Ubuntu. Apart from that, I've authored a two bugfixes
for GNOME (both of which are yet to be committed and are minor
anyway).
I hope that becoming an ambassador would help me help my friends and
the community of people who do not know anything about F/OSS better
and I'm looking forward to having a good time working with Fedora.
