Hey!
As far as I feel, you should not charge anything for membership. A LUG is
very different from a Club or Society. What you can charge for are the
dvd/cds (which you may occasionally throw in for free too). If you have your
LUG T-Shirt then you may charge the junta for them. You can contact training
institutes like NIIT or Aptech for spponsorship. They easily give
substantial amount of money for supporting all of your GNU/LUG based events.

Speakers needed for Community Learning Programs at Birla Institute of Technology

Hey All!
Birla Institute of Technology (www.bitmesra.ac.in) is a premier
engineering college located in Mesra which is around 25 Kms from
Ranchi - The state capital of Jharkhand (Formerly a part of Bihar). We
organize a year round event consisting of Lectures and Workshops under
the banner of Community Learning Programs. The audience for these
workshops and lectures include students, teachers and IT
proffessionals from Ranchi area. This year we are planning to hold
better lectures and workshops especially in the field of Linux
administration, Networking and Virtualization. We already have had a
good number of workshops on Linux with the help of the student
community of our college but it would be better to have them conducted
by experts :-).For this purpose we need good and knowledgeable
speakers who can come to the campus of Birla Institute of Technology
and give talks and conduct workshops. The travelling costs of the
visiting speakers (from India) will be covered by us and will be
provided with standard boarding and lodging facilities in the Campus
Guest house.

I measure Grand Success in terms of participants understanding FOSS and
agreeing to use FOSS. The number of participants also matter to show the
world the Kick start.
The Program will be a failure if we get no feedback after the Program...
We are prepared for both.
We have a sound Core-Committee consisting of abt. 14 members + more expected
There will be Classes for Core-Committee...
We have seen the interest in Linux in our college and we hope for the former
one.

Since we already have a couple of posts on this in the thread, thought

So the solution (*effective*) could be to tamper with the basic
foundation. Here I see the foundation to be as pradeepto mentioned
"Right there when you go and speak on Fedora and foobar at a univ",
"Right when one encourages some person to become a ambassador". This
IMO must also be part of the ambassador status process and not after
one gets the status and begins to preach fedora to others.
I see the "issue" ( I hate to call this a "Problem" ), as something to
do with more preaching that is happening by the new generation (which
is fantabulously great), but at the same time giving importance to
preaching it right!
Thats it from my side (Sorry, it was more than two cents that I
thought it would be in the beginning ;)

And, this isn't off-topic. At least not in my books. I have had a
number of animated discussions with a lot of folks about this. One of
the trends that I notice is that a lot of freshers/younger folks are
coming to Fedora and other projects. The upside is that there is a lot
of fresh minds, the downside is that the earlier mentoring and
coaching which used to happen via *UGs seem to be missing. Add to that
the point which Shakthi had raised - about the Ambassadors and other
participants being more visible and constructive ong the *UGs. We do
have a somewhat unique problem.
There was a time when I used to be the town crier about Producing Open
Source Software. Primarily because it contains elements which are
helpful to the new entrant and, serve as a refresher for the old dog.
I tend to hold to the belief that if Fedora is to lead the advancement
of free and open source software and content through a community of
collaboration, then it is our duty to teach/coach/guide all those who
join us for the ride about the basic foundations of our community and,
the elements that make it tick. Alongside we need to hand hold them
with the fundamental hygiene bits.
So, if someone wants to undertake a small tutorial over IRC on those
bits, I'd love to go to town and exhort a full house.
