Screensaver building : help
by Ankur Sinha
hey folks,
I was looking around for screen savers related to the "fedora community"
in the repos. Sadly, I couldn't find any. There is the floating fedora
logo screen saver, but that doesn't really emphasize on community at
all.
As a result, I intend to make one. (I've read through the srpm to spot's
frog screen saver. Making one doesn't look very complex). I need your
help in selecting the images that it will feature.
Please reply to this mail with links to any images :).
What I was thinking :
- Images from the FUDCons
- Workshops
- Install fests
- etc etc.
I think its going to be something like the presentation on the fedora
community that I found quite a while back[1], only less text, more
images.

Another query:
I also thought of making one with Quotations.
Like quotations from Ayn Rand's series "atlas shrugged", "the
fountainhead" etc. What license would I be looking for to use quotes
from the book? (if any)?
It's just going to be text on some background. Maybe some images here
and there if I can get some fit enough.
Thank you for your time :)

Mirroring Fedora
by Salvadesswaran P.S.
We're thinking about mirroring Fedora 11 repository in our college
intranet for the use of our students. After downloading the whole
repository from IIT-K mirror, how do we mirror it on our server? Any
help would be appreciated.

Event Report: Free Software Day in KLN, Madurai with Fedora
by Arun SAG
Hi,
I conducted one day Free software workshop on 29th August, at KLN madurai
for the pre-final year CSE and IT students (50+). The session started with
an introduction to Free software and philosophy. Then i explained various
GNU/Linux commands and applications. Mailing list etiquettes were taught
using shakthi's presentation (Thanks shakthi) . Introduced IRC and students
were taught about getting help from various support channels.
In afternoon session, it was all about Nmap , Ncat and Ettercap (FOSS
Network Security tools) , students were taught about security risks of
transmitting plain text passwords on the wire, ARP cache poisoning and DNS
spoofing were demonstrated and explained using ettercap.
Fedora 11 was installed in 30+ Lab machines for hands on. The response from
the students was excellent. Hospitality was good.
Fedora 11 DVDs were distributed to all the participants.
I thank HOD of CSE department,KLN and Final year student Dhivakaran for
organizing this event successfully.

Actually I'm an ambassador myself, giving out DVDs, and helping people
adopt Fedora. My only doubts are regarding a few technical things, and
this sticker issue now.

Fedora Sticker for laptop?
by Salvadesswaran P.S.
I know this is off topic, but I'm not sure where to ask this: I bought
a new laptop without any OS and installed Leonidas straight away. It
works perfectly (better than openSUSE/Ubuntu on same model!) and my
dad will be using it. He wants a sticker to put on it indicating it
runs Fedora 11. Is there a way to get a few stickers? I'll pay for
them if needed.

I'm using GWGet.. Currently 40% over. Hope to complete it by Monday
cos I'm on 2-8 unlimited plan. I need the repository for my friends in
college hostel where the proxy server(squid of course) limits external
downloads to 25 MB. We're going to ask our college admin to provide an
internal mirror for the 50 odd Fedora 11 users. I helped them install
but updates are tough with this policy.
Thanks.

Salva

I have done a similar thing at NITD, you could have used rsync instead of
using wget. Take a look at the public mirrors that support rsync here
http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/publiclist/Fedora/11/i386/ . IITK mirror
does not support that, right now and the bandwidth for IITM is very less.
So choose any other mirror and just run this command
rsync -av <url to the directory to be copied> <path to the directory where
it has to be saved>
url is usually of this type rsync://ftp.iitm.ac.in/fedora.
Its better to use rsync because it can be put in cron to automatically
update the repositories.
Google about rsync.
