Hi all,
Recently I met a kid who was aware about Linux and Fedora. He used Fedora 13 on my laptop quite smoothly.
With an aim to promote children of the age group 8 - 15, we can build a remix which would contain applications more apt to the kids. I propose to organise a workshop/workout for the same at FOSS.in. I have written my idea at [1] which can be refined a lot. Also I would like to have community's opinion regarding the target we should plan to achieve and the duration of the workshop, mine is rather ambitious one, to roll out the remix by the end of FOSS.in. Obviously there will be other contributors to help out newbies so if you have the zeal to do something cool, join us and we'll find something for you to do.
Who is in? :-)

No need to congratulate me but a friendly advice, please re-read your mail before you send it. I am saying so because I remember that someone on the mailing list already pointed this out to you earlier.

Thanks for the info on these bugs. We'll keep these in mind while working out the spin. I recently rolled out Fedora KDE Netbook Remix from f13 without encountering these bugs. Maybe we can compare the process at FOSS.in and try to find a suitable workaround for the same.

AFAIK, this bug is related to a API change in dbus-glib package. FOSS.in
is going to be in December, at that time F14 will be out, hopefully we won't have any issues.

Nice idea, but here spin wont work. We will need to have a remix, and we can use Omega as a starting point. It has a lot of the codecs, etc already added. Plus we will need some better artwork that appeals to kids (Rockets? Light colored themes?) These were the things on top of my head, if anything else pops in, I'll let you know!

I agree to some extent. Rolling out a spin would be cool but it might not appeal that much to kids. Remix is much more sensible choice. Omega looks good, plus it will reduce the pain to add a tens of codecs. But I would still like to explore the possibility of a spin (though it would bid the codecs a "bye-bye").

Hi,
I will not physically be present at foss.in this year.
If there are tasks that can be done remotely (over the irc and such), please do let me know.
It would be a good idea to look into packages for kids that are not included in fedora already and have a packaging sprint too. I can head the sprint over the irc.

+1
FYI Pavithran Sakamuri pointed out http://www.slx.no/ which is debian based. We can go through this distro and check out their repo. If the rpms exists for the apps then fine otherwise we can go for on a sprint (which I think would be required anyway).

Create a wiki page with a list of apps that must be included in the spin/remix and then add a wishlist of packages that are not in the repo yet. Having a explicit task list of things is important if you want to involve others.

I have created a wiki page at [1]. Also I have written down the names of Arun, Hiemanshu and Ankur as volunteers who agree to help out on this thread. Please feel free to add/remove your names.
I am trying to create a package list which are there in Fedora repo as well as an apps list which needs to be packaged. Please try to populate them as much as you can.

Count me in. Seriously SchoolOS.org list a huge number of application for kids. (Do watch video too) SchoolOS is ubuntu based distro which is supported by NCERT. The new verson is planned to have fedora base. We are migrating from ubuntu to fedora because of bugs found in 10.x series. I am working in always working in e-learning and FOSS area from last 8 month. I would suggest to following
* Think that we are trying to give DVD to schools which do not have internet. We need to give ISO+Ebook+Videos+InstallGuides * Create big ISO (do not make live DVD) create install iso. So that we can ship as many application as we can with FedoraForKids or Schools (who cares for name ?) * There are number of user interface improvement present in schoolOS which i observed while trainig to kids for example tuxpaint save picture in hidden folder. Student cannot find. So while remixing schoolOS I put a Shortcutlink in Picture Folder to make there life easy. * SchoolOS comes with Ebooks. We can include khan academy videos. * SchoolOS already has a good list of distributor all over india. we need to increase this list to distribure newer version. * In DVD, we need to ship unetbootin.exe so that one can install on USB from Windows system too. Pdf file with all instructions. * DVD must contain wvdial as sometime internet do not work by network manager. one cannot download wvdial from Internet. * now I am using fedora but I always found problem like SElinux. Disable or do not install SELinux alall. Infact I will suggest to have only one user (root) * by default all user must have all permission to do everything. we should not look for security point of view. Think like a software availabilty point of view. * Anaconda must not ask for keyboard, timezone, usernname and otherthings. it shuld only ask - "Where to install" and install everthing * Most of the computer which has windwos has virus. After install Linux on USB , if you insert that USB then windows system modify Autorun.inf (its true as far as ubuntu live, have not checked in fedora). So we must figure out a safe way to install Fedora for Kids in USB so that windows virus must not delete any things. * I will share most of the setting and config files of schoolos which will be helpful for fedora for kids * I am not atall happy with 6month release. Imagine chemistry book contains screenshot which are not longer application. We must give consistant GUI and look for next 2-3 year. Putting FOSS in school in altogher different game and have different stategy. * We must apply these distro in schools which do not have Internet as pilot project and then collect feedback. We need to make 2-3 such cycles before releasing it permantly for next 2-3 years * We must document the process of Network installation from one DVD to whole lab OR create better and automated software for that process. * At the same tiime we must Integrate Sugar and LTSP. Better create FEdoraForKids-ServerEdition which take care for most of things like LTSP, network install, central wiki etc * Please consider this as serious project - http://blog.narendrasisodiya.com/2010/10/foss-in-indian-schools-serious-conc...

Hi,
Let us plan out a meeting for Fedora For Kids. We'll decide the road map and other stuff. Points in my mind we should take up are: 1. It should be a remix or a spin? 2. Who will take up what task? 3. how do we look for more packages and apps?
Anything else you guys want to add?

I want to ask following.
* Ubuntu have sudo feature, how we can add in fedora. automatically like ubuntu. I am asking for remixing purpose so that user need not to edit /etc/sudouser file * can someone create plymouth theme for fedoraforkids ?
GUI and artwork are going to be the most important aspect of the remix/spin. We should talk to Design team about this or Suchakra wants to have a look?
Also we need to consider the fact that while a spin, which will be a part of Fedora releases, will have a larger reach, a remix will be really useful and easy to handle. We need to figure out a way so that kids/students can get maximum benefit out of this.
Next important task is to mark e-books available in public domain. We might have to create a few which should be easy to understand and has a lot of appeal in the form of graphics or animation. Docs team should be involved for this.
Any other thing I am missing?

See, Wallpaper, menu and other GUI element we have to decide for one time. We should not change them for any newer version because these distro are suppose to come textbook which do not change year by year.

I am somewhat aesthetically inclined and somewhat apt in configuring the looks of a desktop [1] :) using available artwork/apps (I'd recommend 'awn' to kids for sure) I'm fine with some Gimp and Inkscape too. I'll start a conversation with the design team and gather what all I require for a nice desktop. AFAIK, a modded plymouth theme, some open icons, a nice and friendly logo and a cute wallpaper is mostly what we need. We need to identify some apps too, which make the interface a bit friendly (eg a themed gnomenu [2])
However what age-group are we aiming by the way?
