A suggestion to promote Free Media

Hello All,

I found that contributors of Fedora are trying hard to drive the free media Program . I recently found the mail requesting contribution to free media Program. Rather having to mail the CD/DVD with mailing charges, they can send the CD/DVD to places near by . Is that mandatory that a Ambassador should drive free media program ?

All the people who are available with the CD/DVD media can enrol themselves to that media distribution program , If a person from that locality request free media , we can point them to the resource holding person , so that the request is satisfied .

I am also interested in Free media program , I feel this . Please suggest me if I am wrong.

You mean sending a bulk of media to certain contacts? This will also
cost money, and will probably cause wastage of media since few requests
come from locations that are near to each other : The holders of these
bulk media will in turn have to pay postage to at most times, therefore
it results in more cost, not less.

Another factor is that volunteers of the free media program cannot
produce such media in such large amounts to supply. (if we could, we
wouldn't be asking more folks to sign up ;) )

Requests come from all parts of the country. Yes, a lot of them come
from Bangalore and Pune but these are mostly handled by free media
contributors from the respective cities.

While it is not mandatory that an Ambassador be a free media contact,
you have to have an FAS account and be part of the free media group to
have access to the free media trac (and mailing list).

This sounds like an integration of the free media and local contact
programmes. This is one of the goals of the free media program, but it
will take sometime before this can be streamlined and implemented under
a larger, lets say, "Get yourself a copy of Fedora" programme.

Please sign up and accept two tickets a month. It's all we request of
you :)

You should continue this discussion along with any more ideas that you
can come up with, at the free media list[1] which is a more apt
location. The members of the list are eager to participate in discussion
aimed at improvements.

arun's idea works for me though. due to continuous in-campus requests,
i'm still able to supply live media (i had excess of them from last
event) and make live USBs sometimes to those who prefer. local
contacts seem efficient in campuses for sure :) our techfest is around
the corner and i'm sure the foss stall will be laden with media
requests again!

I'm glad to hear that.

The free media programme intends to make fedora available to folks who
are not able to obtain it from other channels. So, folks at your campus
who can contact you and receive Fedora are not who the programme intends
to service. :P

It is for folks who cannot make it to tech. fests., who cannot
download/purchase media.

(We do not count such media distribution as contribution to the free
media program in an attempt to keep the programme separated from the
other channels)

I found out that there is already a page of that sort [1] I'm still
not sure whether this is the same type of page you are asking for. And
also I couldn't help noticing the name "Hariyana" Have a last look
before I rectify it :)

I really appreciate you folks spending time on this.

A few things to keep in mind:

- Links etc. on the main page are decided by the websites team. You will
need to start up a discussion there for this. It would be better if we
spent more time thinking before requesting changes.

- People don't need to know that there is a free media volunteer in
their locality. They need to log on to the net and file a ticket which
will be taken care of by someone. Do not confuse the free media
programme with Ambassadors giving out media to people around them. It is
not the same thing.

Like I said, we will try and integrate all the channels of obtaining
Fedora, but as of now they're all separate. Until we chalk out a
definite system, we don't want to rush into anything.

Sorry for slightly changing topic but it is same as Promoting Free Media.

This time we are going to start distributing Fedora 14 Media to the major
Education Institute.

We will provide 5 Fedora 14 Dvds to approximate 15 collages mostly to the
faculties who are inclined to Open source.

Once we get good feed back will try to repeat to more collage in Gujarat.

Let us wait Fedora 14 release and wait for the feed back.

Hello Arun,

May I please have your FAS? I couldn't find you in the free media trac
instance. Your name is not present in the list here[1]. Are you a free
media volunteer or a local contact? Your user page hasn't yet been
created[2] as the local contacts page shows[3].  Please do not mix up
the two.

Reiterating : A free media contact is one who picks up tickets from the
free media trac and services those requests, not one who provides media
to folks offlist etc. (like what you're doing at the moment)

Why we want to highlight the difference : to have an accurate statistic
of the numbers that the free media is delivering (and a list of active
members), and what the other channels are delivering.

For tech festa the best thing to do is to have people buy or get their own DVD and you burn it for them. This always works best and only people who really need them will come to you.

thanks..but live usb creation is the easiest way that i see.takes less
time to create and install and everyone in campus carries one in his
pocket too :) we create local shares and servers too so users can
directly download images and create their usbs themselves.
