Please read: Staging branch removal/reorg
by Kevin Fenzi
Greetings.
if you use the 'staging' branch in fedora infrastructure puppet repo,
please read this. ;)
I've updated our SOP docs on staging:
http://infrastructure.fedoraproject.org/infra/docs/staging.txt
to the new way we will be doing staging.
Short summary:
- The seperate 'staging' branch is going away soon. Possibly later this
week if I can manage it.
- You will need to use the above method to make changes to staging
hosts and applications.
Cutover plans:
- Disable puppet on all staging machines.
- Change puppet config on them to correctly look for 'modules-staging'
first since they are in the staging puppet env.
- In turn, test puppet runs on them, make any needed changes to prevent
doom.
- re-enable puppet on each.
- Wait a few days and make sure everything is happy.
- git branch -D staging
- create cron job that diffs and nags us about modules-staging/* items
per week.
Is anyone doing any testing or deployment in staging right now that
would be affected by this? Please let me know so I can schedule around
it.
Thoughts? Concerns? Rotten tomatos?

What is the proposed hashing anonymizing scheme for the IP addresses?
How can you do this securely? Keep in mind that an attacker can
control some of the hashes in the public logs (by visiting the web
servers with various ip addresses).

upcoming hosted/collab plans
by Kevin Fenzi
Greetings.
I thought I would give the list a heads up on some upcoming plans for
fedorahosted.org and lists.fedoraproject.org.
Currently, there are 4 machines handling things for these two domains.
Two pairs of two. Each are using drbd and heardbeat to replicate data:
hosted03 - hosted04
collab03 - collab04
I'm going to look at installing new instances and move them from drbd
to using glusterfs. Theres a number of advantages to this:
* Both nodes can access the data. With drbd, only the primary can.
* glusterfs doesn't require any 3rd party kernel modules. (it's fuse or
nfs on the client side).
* Hopefully glusterfs will be less fragile when a machine fails, and
require less intervention to sync back up.
I'm going to look at working on a new hosted01/02 pair this week to do
this migration. Sadly, we don't have enough disk to set them up at the
same time as the hosted03/04 pair, so I will be breaking the drbd
replication and re-installing hosted04 as hosted02. We will have a
short time when there's no drbd replication, but we still have backups
and should soon have the data synced to the new glusterfs.
Hopefully, I will have a hosted01 today, do hosted02 tomorrow and start
syncing data. Then we can schedule the switchover for later in the
week. (It should be just simple take down services, rsync again, change
dns).
After hosted is all moved and happy, I want to do the same for collab
machines, and once they are all done, I want to look at moving
lists.fedorahosted.org to the second node of the collab pair.
Anyhow, flaws in this plan or better ideas or whatever welcome.

Fedora 17 Beta Freeze in effect.
by Kevin Fenzi
Greetings.
we are now in the infrastructure freeze leading up to the Fedora 17
Beta release. This is a pre-release freeze.
Please see:
https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-infrastructure/browser/architecture/Envir...
Anything in the Pre Release freeze box is frozen until 2012-04-03 (or
later if Beta slips). This means there should be NO puppet changes to
any hosts in there (including global ones) without signoff of the
change from at least 2 folks in sysadmin-main and/or
release-engineering.
Thanks,
kevin

Update to Infrastructure, help catch problems before beta
by Toshio Kuratomi
* Note: For FESCo and QA, this is just an FYI
Fedora Infrastructure uses the puppet configuration management software to
push configuration files out to all of its machines. A new release of puppet
has been created and pushed out to the EPEL repositories today. This release
includes several security fixes [1]_ that we have decided are very important for
us to apply. Due to that, we are going to be updating puppet on all of our
machines.
We're sending this message out to alert you to the potential for disruptions
from this, including disruptions that could slip the Fedora Beta release. We
do not anticipate such problems because the actual changes to the puppet code
should be rather small. We're not even anticipating any interruption of
services. However, this update is going out to all of our machines so we want
people to be aware that problems could occur and if they experience any
problems in the critical path to releasing the Beta on time to report them to
us ASAP [2]_.
.. [1]_: http://projects.puppetlabs.com/projects/puppet/wiki/Release_Notes#2.6.15
.. [2]_: Contact us in #fedora-admin on irc.freenode.net, via our ticketing
system at https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-infrastructure , or our mailing
list: infrastructure(a)lists.fedoraproject.org
Thank you,
Your friendly neighborhood infrastructure team

Freeze break: puppet update
by Kevin Fenzi
Greetings
There's a new puppet release that has a number of security fixes to it.
I'd like to do the following:
- Update puppet in our stg machines and wait an hour for it to run
twice ok on those machines. This may fail due to the older master, we
will need to watch the output here.
- Update on lockbox01 (our puppetmaster) and wait for a cycle to make
sure all machines process ok.
- Finally, update puppet on all the other boxes.
We should be able to back out to the current version at any of these
points if it fails.
