Hi folks, I would like to introduce myself too: First of all I would like to give a "thanks a lot" and "wow - great job!!!" to all who have made fedora become reality!!! It is fun to work with it. My name is Alexander Rudolf. I live in Germany. I am an IT infrastructure consultant and systems engineer working for a company in Dresden, Saxony. "Growed up" (I am 39) with MS-DOS an Novell NetWare in the early 90s when I started my work live I now have a lot experience with heterogeneous networks, network equipment and security, systems management, high availability solutions and those things. Made my MCSA for Windows Server and am LPI-C certified since 2006. My most recent experiences are in Linux system administration, security, virtualization and most of all - Nagios. I supported a number of related projects for some customers and wrote a couple of Nagios plugins. Most of them in bash, but also in VBS and PowerShell for the windows driven landscape. I would now like to actively join the fedora infrastructure team and do my very best to provide support. Please help me to understand how I can contribute best! Best regards, Alex

DNSSEC repos.fedorapeople DLV

It looks like fedorapeople.org is validated using dlv.isc.org, you might want to change this now that .org is signed: http://dnsviz.net/d/fedorapeople.org/dnssec/ However, it also looks like repos.fedorapeople.org is unsigned (http://dnsviz.net/d/repos.fedorapeople.org/dnssec/) if I am understanding this correctly, in fact it looks like all *.fedorapeople.org objects are unsigned, or something else is broken, which means that anyone validating using DNSSEC (and there aren't many of us) is unable to visit those pages. I am a subscriber to the digest only so it may take me some time to reply unless you cc me. -Erinn

ansible musings...

Greetings. The upstream ansible folks have been discussing a 'best practices' doc at: https://github.com/ansible/ansible/blob/devel/docsite/rst/bestpractices.rst and I have been pondering how we want to setup things on our ansible instance before we add a bunch more things to it. So, some outstanding questions for comment/discussion: a) I think I like the idea of splitting out per role trees for things. But we need to decide what level of granularity a 'role' is. For example, mirrormanager in puppet is a single module. However, it's really: mirrormanager proxy setup files mirrormanager mirrorlist server web app mirrormanager web app (the admin part) mirrormanager backend scripts (crawler, creating lists, etc) So, for our purposes should we have mirrormanager all in the same 'role' tree? or should we split it out by functionality? Many roles won't have this issue, as they will be simpler. b) What would be the workflow for staging with ansible? Ie, I want to make some config changes only in staging and iron them out and then merge them back to production when ready. Do we copy the role and modify? Do we require only changing vars and seperate files? Will be thinking on it more, but input welcome. kevin

Hi all, I brought up the subject at the meeting but we should discuss this here as well. Do we want to be involved in the GSoC? Do we have wishes/ideas/desires? The main page for Fedora seems to be at [1] and there are already some ideas presented at [2]. Among these ideas we find again gitlab for Fedora Hosted. There is also something for the spins (might be worth checking this wrt formulas). I'm sure we can come up with ideas from our project, fedmsg, badges (I can come up with some myself) but then there is of course the question of supervision. Note that you can also team up for the supervision, which can make things easier. Apparently we still have some time but we shouldn't wait too long if we are interested. Greetings, My name is Daniel and I am currently a second year University student in a Computing and Information systems program. What I can offer is basic scripting in Bourne, Bash, and Python. I have more advanced skills in Java programming since this is the main language is used in my University program. I spend additional time with reading Linux related literature such as "The Linux Administration Handbook" and the "Linux Programming Interface". The latter inspired me learn the C language so I can apply the concepts I have learned and experiment with kernel system calls. I also work part time as Technical Support Representative in a Cable/Internet Company. My goal for the next 3 years is to become a Software Developer with good coding practice and a solid foundation in algorithmic computation and design patterns. I have a keen interest in the kernel structure and the lower level aspect of hard- and software communication. I want to contribute to the team that provided me with an operation system that gave me possibilities to be as creative as I wanted to be - and that is for free. I want to become a valuable member of this community and I want to be known for my commitment and skill. I will join the fedora meetings on a regular basis to get the big picture of what is going on right know. Fedocal to prod?

Hi all, I am getting some pressure to move fedocal to production (which is pretty nice). So just to be sure the next steps should be: - roll out the 0.1.0 release - package it - it now has a setup.py so I hope that it'll be pretty simple - request for hosting/hw ? - create the adequate puppet module - which url? admin.fedoraproject.org/calendar ? Do I miss anything? Also, what's the traditional time-line to move from stg to prod? Thanks, Pierre

python-fedora and pkgdb repository changes -- reclone i necessary

Today we did some housecleaning on the python-fedora and packagedb github repositories. Depending on what you were doing, you may want/need to reclone the repository. or packagedb, we renamed the old devel branch to devel-old. I don't anticipate that anyone was currently using this. People should be using develop instead. This rename should hopeully keep people rom being conused as to where they should be making commits. For python-fedora, we renamed the devel branch to develop. This is because git flow's deault branch scheme is to use develop as the branch where active work is being performed. Using devel instead of develop was just confusing people and was a difference from the defaults when running git flow init. I you have a python-fedora checkout, the easiest way to get setup to use the new develop branch is to reclone the repository from github. It is possible to change the branches you have to push, pull, and use git low to the develop branch instead of devel but it's a multistep process o renaming branches locally, changing your remote, and manually editing the .git/conig to set git low to use the right branches. Much easier to just reclone in this case. -Toshio

Proposal for adding the UniversalLanguageSelector to the Fedora Wiki

FAS release imminent, string freeze on the release/0.8.16 branch

Dear all, I'm preparing a new fas release now. This release has a few new strings so I'll be pushing it out to the translators soon. Translators generally like to have about 10 days to work so I'll be planning to release and push to production on Thursday the 28th of February. Now that we're using git flow, I'm going to try something new -- develop is going to continue to be open for work/merging of new features/etc. The release/08.16 branch is where I'll be merging bugfixes for the release, translations, and other things for the release. Hopefully these will be able to go on in parallel. If there are any hotfixes before release, we'll need to merge them to develop, release/0.8.16, and master. Hopefully this won't be too much of a burden. If there's anything I've forgotten in thinking about how to manage this release via git flow, feel free to let me know :-) -Toshio

Heads Up: Pending Bugzilla Changes

With the new version of bugzilla that is currently deployed on partner-bugzilla, there are some API changes [1] that have prompted changes in python-bugzilla. AFAIK, the updates to python-bugzilla have all been written but there are changes to how the code does updates. I've requested a new build for testing integration and they should land sometime in the next day or so. If you're maintaining something that uses python-bugzilla, you might want to take a look to make sure that you won't need code changes when the new 4.4 hits production servers. Static HTML website on Fedora Hosted

Hello, I am owner of a project hosted on Fedora Hosted. So far I've been keeping web page of my project on fedorapeople.org and this solution worked quite well until now. After the project evolved there are some problems with current solution. The biggest of them is that only I can modify the website. Besides that changing project owner in the future would change the address of the website. Is there any possibility to host static HTML web page (instead of Trac instance) on Fedora Hosted? It would be great if all members of FAS group associated with the project could make changes to the website through SSH. Thank you, Mikolaj Izdebski

fedora hosted, sharding and openid

Today Patrick got the trac plugin for openid working pretty well with the new openid service. This effectively breaks our tight bind to the fas db (and mod_auth_pgsql) from the hosted boxes. A while back we discussed the possibility of scaling the hosted service out horizontally somewhat by being able to break the projects up into chunks of data. We said we'd need folks to refer to their sites with something like: projectname.fedorahosted.org so we could direct them to the right machine via dns on the backend. And we could then more easily add capacity as needed. One thing we've been doing is running fedorahosted behind https. Part of that is b/c we were doing a basic-auth to pgsql to auth against fas. With openid that won't be an issue anymore. The second reason is for personal/private/confidential items in tickets or what-not - for example the board trac instance. To that I suggest we bottle up the board trac instance, stuff it somewhere we can put an ssl cert in front of it and move along. For the rest we make them non-ssl'd. The openid login, of course would be ssl'd, but the rest of the site doesn't really need to be, does it? So we'd still need to get people to refer to the right urls. I don't think that would be likely to happen over night but we can at least start doing so, right? What we get: 1. we get the possibility of not having all of our eggs in the one basket of serverbeach and the two hosted instances running now 2. we can possibly gain performance by getting some of the data off of the one big gluster dastastore. 3. we gain the ability to setup a 'newhosted' server, put a few trac/git/etc instances over there and try things out w/o breaking all the rest of them. 4. If we suddenly find we have a single, extremely popular project (good problem to have imo) then we can give it a dedicate instance and maintain performance. Does anyone like this idea? Is anyone opposed to it? Got criticisms that sould be addressed? Things I'm completely blanking about? let me know. Thanks, -sv

You can test it by going to any website that accepts OpenID as authentication, and enter "http://<username>.id.stg.fedoraproject.org/" as your OpenID, with "<username>" replaced by your FAS username. Please give me feedback on websites that were successful, that were not successful, and on the system itself. monitoring rebuild

Greetings. I'd like to look at revamping our nagios setup to be nicer. Problems with our current setup: - It's very easy to make syntax errors that you can only fix with further commits. (ie, no sanity checking at all). - nagios alerts us too much for things that don't matter or that we cannot do anything about. (isolated network issues, servers not responding in cases where there are no impacts, alerting then recovering very quickly) - our dependencies are not right, so we get 50 pages for an issue that is a single network or gateway link being down. - nagios monitors remote machines over vpn links, but also over non vpn links, leading to us having confusion over what a machine is named in nagios. - Our current setup isn't flexable enough to allow monitoring of non core resources, but we want to do this. (for example, qa machines or secondary arch machines or cloud machines, where we may want different groups to get alerted or manage those machines). - When we add new machines or services we often forget to add monitoring, or we don't monitor all the things we should be. - When we do work on machines we sometimes forget to silence nagios. Requirements: - syntax check commits and reject them where they would break things. - only send pages for things that impact either end users or maintainers. Things that don't impact either of those should mail/notify, but not page. - correct dependencies so if one thing is down all that block on it really does not alert. - allow non FI groups to have machines/networks they manage. - When adding new machine/service, monitoring should be automatically configured if at all possible. - Possibly have some kind of escalations setup... page, wait X min for an ack, if not page again or page more people, etc. - When doing work have an easy way to silence alerts for affected machines. Some possible parts of the solution: - check_mk - This would allow us to just install and query it, and it would monitor all the running process, etc. Could very much simplify config on normal nodes. - ansible playbooks to disable notifications or alerts in cases where thats needed easily. We can use the web interface, but a simple script to do this would be nice to call from other playbooks. This needs consistent naming for hosts. - commit hook to check syntax. This will require nagios on lockbox01 and installing to a tree or something, unless there's a way we can pull the syntax checking out of nagios. Does python-nagios package do it? - Identify those items/hosts that are ones that should page, assume rest are email/notice only. The mass reboot sop has these already in the Class A/B hosts listed there. I can easily generate a list. I'm sure there's more things we can do here, and several people have looked into this problem in the past. Its not a simple one, but I think it's a good one to work on and fix. I'm not sure if it makes sense to make a new nagios git repo (like we did for dns) or just move it over to ansible repo. I kind of think it would be nicer just in ansible repo. This is just prelim ideas on the scope and problem... I'll look at starting on some more detailed work soon. kevin

Hello all, My name is Kiril Nesenko. I work at Red Hat as Software Integration Engineer for oVirt/RHEV product. Here are some details about me: I have a good knowledge in Linux systems (installing,configuring,administration). Today I maintain continuous integration env. with 200+ servers. Working with puppet, foreman, jenkins, gerrit. I think it is a great opportunity for me to contribute for infra team. I have some knowledge to share and I am sure I will learn here a lot. Hey, I've disabled wtfnix.com in mirrormanager because the mirror url currently redirects to a domain name ad. http://wtfnix.com/ and it was causing some strange errors for yum/repoquery. I'm not sure if we usually do something else (contact the mirror admin or send email to the mirrors list). Sending this email to let someone followup if they know of something else that needs to happen. -Toshio

Not able to add 5th usb 3.0 drive

Greetings, We are experimenting with using usb 3.0 drives as iscsi disks for a vmware cluster. When I add the 5th usb disk, the server will not even boot and it looks like it looses disks 1&2. Any ideas appreciated. - Thanks Chris
