Ping Rex
by Anne Wilson
Rex, some time ago you told me the best way to start gpg-agent under Fedora.
Unfortunately I can't find the message, and I have problems with agent on the
F10 netbook and the newly repaired CentOS 5.2 box. If you could tell me again
I'll make sure that it is easily found - a gpg page has been started on
userbase, so I could put it there.

Lost systray icons
by Anne Wilson
Since a crash yesterday I have lost most of the systray icons. I've tried
renaming plasma-appletsrc, and lost even more. Now I only see the icons for
battery/mains power and knetworkmanager icons (before the rename I also had
the NM-applet and half! of the notifier). Hovering over the space left shows
the popup for all the icons I'd expect to see. Restarting plasma after the
rename gives
[anne@AA1 config]$ plasma

Any ideas for recovering the icons?

much of KDE freezes for 20 seconds (includes strace output)
by Hans Ecke
Hi there-
Ever since I switched from KDE 3.5 (F8) to KDE 4.2 (F10) I have this
problem:
When:
* starting a KDE application, for instance konqueror
* opening the start menu
* attempting to add a new event in korganizer
What happens: (example: new konqui instance)
Konqueror appears. By default for me it appears in a blank window.
However when trying to input anything in the location bar it does not
take any input. In fact, it does not even redraw itself if I minimize it
and then restore. It remains frozen like this for about 20 seconds. Then
everything is normal again.
Once that happens everything is fine for a while (10 minutes or so). New
konqueror windows come up and are responsive just fine. But if I don't
do anything for a while the problem reappears.
What happens: (example: new event in korganizer)
I double-click on a time in korganizer. A "New Event" window comes up.
Similar to the konqueror example, it draws itself completely, but then
becomes nonresponsive and does not redraw itself. Becomes responsive
again after about 20 seconds.
What happens: (example: start menu)
I click on the start menu. It appears as a black square with rounded
corners, obscuring the desktop and windows underneath. In other words,
different from the examples above it does not draw itself before
freezing. It unfreezes after 20 seconds.
Speculation:
Some service is failing and KDE takes 20 seconds to notice that or to
try and start it.
How do I debug that? I attached an strace log, but that is very opaque.
Scroll down the timestamps and you see the big jump at 07:50:38.674661
and at 07:50:49.615261. Two select() calls that take 10 and 15 seconds,
respectively. I guess file descriptor 7 is its connection to DBUS?
Any help would be appreciated. This is very frustrating.....
Cheers
Hans

F11-Beta KDE Live x86_64 is i586?
by Martin Kho
Hi,
I'm not sure if this question belongs to this list.
Today I downloaded Fedora 11 Beta KDE LiveCD 64bit - F11-Beta-
x86_64-Live.iso - and I got the 32bit (i586) version.
Did anyone else experienced this?
I downloaded the iso from the mirror fedora.tu-chemnitz.de in
Germany.
Do I have to try another mirror?
Thanks,
Martin Kho

[KDE4.2] System freezes when laptop lid is closed.
by ap
Hi Group,
I have a Dell Inspion laptop which runs Fedora 10 with KDE4.2. When my
laptop lid kept closed for more than 30 minutes, my system freezes. I have
given option to lock the screen while closing the lid in the Power
Management. and for a short time period ( < 30 mins) it works fine. After 30
minutes i get a blue screen and a mouse pointer. I can move the mouse but no
login window is coming. (If it is monitor stand by, how to recover from this
state?)
Laptop was running on AC while noticed the above scenario. I didn't checked
this on battery power. I use "Performance" profile for "running on AC". and
also tried disabling Monitor Power Management.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Anoop

Gpg broken again
by Anne Wilson
Today Gpg has stopped working again. I presume it is down to the upgrade I
did a few hours ago. I tried replacing pubring with a known good version,
just in case there actually was some corruption, but it made no difference.
Neither kgpg nor KMail offer me any keys - just a blank sheet.

Has kmenueditor disappeared? I thought I had seen it since I moved to KDE4,
but I could be mistaken.

Laptop security
by Anne Wilson
Considering how many of us use laptops, I wonder if Adeona might be a useful
package to have in the stable? It's a laptop recovery tool, for use after
loss.
It is GPL http://adeona.cs.washington.edu/index.html but it depends, at the
moment, on OpenDHT and I haven't seen a license notice for that.
