FUDCon Toronto
by Steven M. Parrish
I am planning on attending FUDCon this December and would like to try and
organize a face to face KDE-SIG meeting. One of the topics will be the recent
get.f.p.o redesign. My hope is we can then meet with the Board members who
are present and try and come to an amicable solution in time for F13.
If you are planning to attend just post a reply, and also feel free to post
any topic ideas you have as well.
Steven

Anyone tried KDE LiveCD F12Alpha in qemu-kvm?
by Martin Kho
I did ... without success. I get the following in .xsession-errors:
startkde: Starting up...
kdeinit4: preparing to launch /usr/lib64/libkdeinit4_klauncher.so
kdeinit4: Communication error with launcher. Exiting!
Communication error with KInit.
startkde: Could not start ksmserver. Check your installation.
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset
startkde: Shutting down...
kdeinit4_wrapper: Warning: connect(/home/liveuser/.kde/socket-
localhost.localdomain/kdeinit4__0) failed: : Connection refused
Error: Can not contact kdeinit4!
startkde: Running shutdown scripts...
Do I miss something, or is this a bug?

P.S The LiveCD works when booted without qemu-kvm.

Apologies for using an old link to create the last mail. Please reply to this

DVD installation experience
by Sebastian Vahl
Hi.
Due to a discussion in the german forum I've tried a DVD installation of F11
today to see what happens if someone installs KDE instead of GNOME as desktop
(and don't touch the other groups).
The result was a bit frustrating: For many tasks there are now two
applications installed. One package from @kde-desktop, one (gnome) package
from the corresponding group (@internet, @sound-and-video etc).
In my eyes this might be a bit confusing to new users, especially if they are
familiar with KDE.
So is there a way we can change this? Or was this already discussed (and
rejected) in the past? Or should we simply advice KDE users to use the live
images and avoid the DVD?

How to upgrade F11 to kde 4.3.0 in update-testing ?
by Fabio Canepa
Hi,
I've update my F11 to kde 4.3.0 using the following command:
sudo yum --enablerepo=updates-testing groupupdate 'KDE (K Desktop Environment)'
but I'm not sure this is correct way because I've some trouble trying
to test the updates for bug 516386
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=516386).
Some packages kde package where not installed after updating group
'KDE (K Desktop Environment)' (eg: PyKDE4 where not installed).
Which is the correct way to track kde 4.3.0 in update-testing ?
Thanx.

Desktop themes problem?
by Anne Wilson
Before I file a bz, can someone experiment a bit for me, and see whether they
see the same problem?
While testing for a bug report I installed a few extra themes, and all seemed
well. However, slim-glow would not display (I don't have desktop effects
enabled, as this laptop has unacceptably slow screen repaints with them). I
uninstalled it and reinstalled it. It didn't show up on the available themes
list. I installed a couple more, and they don't show up either.
The core themes are, as I understand it, oxygen, air, slim-glow, heron and
elegance, so choose one that you are least worried about to experiment on :-)
in case you can't get it back.
It looks as though slim-glow is in some way broken. Worse than that, it looks
as though uninstalling one of the core desktop themes actually breaks the
theme install dialogue.
One further point, I found that I could change the desktop theme about 3
times, after which it would not change without logging out and back in.
