kde4.3, is printing fixed?
by Neal Becker
I'm anxious to find out if kde4.3 is going to fix printing here. Printing in
all kde apps is screwed up here, and has been all through kde4. I'm printing
to hp office lasers. Printing always selects A4 paper, which causes the machine
to stop and wait for someone to tell it to use letter, and cuts off some of the
printout, making them generally useless. Also, it always prints in duplex
_short_ side no matter what I choose. Is this fixed by any chance?

Are you being heard?
by Anne Wilson
You've often heard me say that KDE developers do give as much time as they
can, and that feature requests should be reported on bugzilla. Well, it
seems we've reached the situation where there has been a flood of reports,
some genuine bugs, some wishes reported as bugs, and some straightforward
feature requests reported. That means that triage has got completely out of
hand, so a new experiment is being tried. Take a look at
http://brainstorm.forum.kde.org
The idea is that you can submit your ideas, features requests. The moderators
will filter out spam, rants and duplicates of ideas, and if your idea has
passed that test it goes onto the forum for discussion by other users. This
should achieve two things. It should give a place where you can make a clear
statement of your wants and needs and the developers know where to look for
feedback about them. The feedback submitted in comments will also help
developers see how many people actually would use the idea if it is coded.
This does not mean that every idea will eventually be carried out. There can
be many reasons why the idea is not feasible. Maybe there simply isn't time
to do it, if it's a big undertaking. Maybe no developer would use it, so
motivation is low when time is short. Maybe there already is some other way
of doing the same thing. Maybe even realising the idea would break other
things. In the end it must be the decision of the developers, but this
initiative should be really valuable. Let's use it.
Do remember that crashes or unexpected program behaviour is still a bug, and
must still be reported on bugzilla. Also, being fairly new and very recently
overhauled, so you may find bugs there too. Deal with them in the usual way,
through bugzilla.
Many people say "I can't code, so I can't help!" - this is a way that everyone
who cares about KDE can help without writing a line of code ;-)

Possible clue to NM+WPA problems
by Anne Wilson
This laptop got Fedora 11 installed about a week ago. At that time it was
working with wireless, NM controlled, talking to a Netgear router. The
connection was smooth and pretty well trouble-free.
Yesterday I moved to another part of the house where wireless is provided by a
Netgear router acting as a switch. In theory it's the same model as the other
one, but it's actually slightly older. NM can't connect to this one at all.
It sees it, it says it has 95% strength, but it can't get the WPA key to work.
Looking at the setup screens for the two routers, the one that works well with
Fedora has the setting WPA-PSK+WPA2-PSK, which I use. The one that doesn't
offers only WPA-PSK - presumably the older standard. Could it be that NM is
designed to work with WPA2?

- If not officially approved by FPC and FESCo the page shouldn't be named
"Guidelines"
- Proposals: "Best Practices", "Packaging Drafts"
o Why does kde-filesystem own /etc/kde4?:
* related post on fedora-kde mailinglist:

digikam confusion
by Petrus de Calguarium
I just noticed that there is digikam-0.10.0.2 at kderedhat. It
arrived today, ie., Aug5.
My system has digikam-1.0.0.0.3.beta3, which must have come from
update-testing some days ago.
rpm -Uvh tells me that the beta3 is newer (!), but it has been
available for a long time and is not released Aug5.
Which is the more current version?

Arizona Business and Liberty Experience 2009
by Ryan Rix
Hello,
I am on the Promotion team of a Free Software Conference being held October
24 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. The purpose of the conference is to bring FOSS
software to small and medium sized business, government and schools. The
primary distribution that will be represented will be Ubuntu GNU/Linux. I
think that a more 'bleeding edge' distro such as Fedora could benefit from
such a conference as well as the conference and attendees. Plus, I am a huge
Fedora-KDE fan :)
Does Fedora and the Fedora KDE-SIG have any interest in sponsoring (either
with volunteers or booths, or via monetary donations) this event? I will be
forwarding a call for presentations shortly, as well.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Arizona's Premiere Conference on Open Source Software Offers Insight on
Leveraging Open Source Tools to Reduce IT Costs and Increase Flexibility in
the Midst of Economic Uncertainty.
TEMPE, AZ -- Building on the success of its first run last September, the
Arizona Business & Liberty Experience Conference (ABLEconf) is set to return
to the University of Advancing Technology (UAT) on the 24th of October,
2009.
With businesses, schools, governments, non-profits and individuals all
looking to cut costs wherever they can, open-source software can help
leverage the advantage of using software in their infrastructure that
delivers enterprise-ready results without the entanglements of costly
licensing.
Open source office application suites like OpenOffice.org can be leveraged
to cut the repeating costs of paying for new office software and training,
while implementing open standards that make it easy to do business with
users of all variety of office software.
Firewall systems such as OpenBSD's pf can be used to implement industry-
proven network security at the fraction of the cost of firewall systems with
high licensing and support costs.
Operating systems such as GNU/Linux and its Ubuntu distribution can be used
to create reliable, secure desktop systems impervious to viruses and
malware that are highly customizable to an individual company or school's
needs, entail no licensing costs, and require less frequent hardware
upgrades than proprietary systems such as Windows and Mac OS X.
These, and many more topics will be presented and discussed. Thanks to
sponsors like RD Harris PC and our host, UAT, admission is free. No
registration is required to attend.
ABLEconf was founded in 2008 by a coalition of Free / Open-Source software
groups and associations in Arizona. The free-admission one-day conference
hosts a wide variety of speaking tracks and sessions on how to take
advantage of open source software in small business, government, medical,
enterprise, and individual use.

Why does kde-filesystem own /etc/kde4?
by Kevin Kofler
Hi,
I have noticed that kde-filesystem owns the following (empty) directories:
/etc/kde4
/etc/kde4/env
/etc/kde4/kdm
/etc/kde4/shutdown
My question is: Why???
KDE 4 looks in /etc/kde just like KDE 3 does, /etc/kde4 is ignored entirely,
as `kde4-config --path config` will confirm to you. The 3 empty
subdirectories seem completely unused as well.
If anything is trying to install to those directories, it needs to be fixed
to install to /etc/kde instead!
I propose we remove /etc/kde4 from kde-filesystem effective immediately.

Amarok1 alongside Amarok2 in kde-redhat?
by Ryan Rix
Hello,
The kde-redhat repo packages amarok1 alongside of amarok but these two
packages conflict with eachother. How hard would it be to repackage it so
that amarok1 could be installed alongside amarok?
