lost sound subsystem again
by Mike Park
Hi there,
Has anyone experienced losing their sound subsystem from an update in
the last couple of days? By verifying loss of sound subsystem, I
checked by:
- going into 'System Settings' -> 'Multimedia' -> 'Audio Output' -> <any entry>
- selecting the only non-greyed out selection-item on the right
(titled 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo' for me)
- selecting 'Test'
result: no output
'sudo tail -f /var/log/messages' produces only a message about
'ratelimit.c' coming from pulseaudio as I hit the 'Test' button in
each entry under 'Audio Output':
Apr 19 11:28:22 bart pulseaudio[28281]: ratelimit.c: 294 events suppressed
Apr 19 11:29:04 bart pulseaudio[28281]: ratelimit.c: 319 events suppressed
Apr 19 11:29:55 bart pulseaudio[28281]: ratelimit.c: 305 events suppressed
Apr 19 11:45:02 bart pulseaudio[28281]: ratelimit.c: 207 events suppressed
Apr 19 11:45:33 bart pulseaudio[28281]: ratelimit.c: 258 events suppressed
Before I go downgrading my packages, I thought I'd see if anyone else
on this list has experienced the same and can pinpoint the problem
package faster.

Fwd: RE: [Ilg] Installing xf86-video-intel-2.10
by Anne Wilson
My new laptop has the i915 video chipset, which doesn't work with the Fedora-
included Intel driver, so I tried to install the latest driver. When I
couldn't get a result from that I forwarded the log file to Intel and asked
for help - incidentally, I'm impressed. I asked yesterday early evening and
when I logged in this morning I had a reply.
The bug report how-to linked below is to file a bug to freedesktop.org - and
frankly looks scarey in the amount of digging it seems to require. However,
in view of the answer below, I wonder if it's more appropriate anyway to file
a Fedora bug? And what does he mean by the 'kernel config file'?

The log says:
(EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected.
It indicates the kernel doesn't support the this new hardware. But I think
Fedora 12 kernel should have supported it. Please file a file according to
http://intellinuxgraphics.org/how_to_report_bug.html. Remember attach dmesg
output. Better attach kernel config file.
Thanks
Gordon

Nepomuk/Strigi issue(?): files re-indexed after reboot
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello Everyone
I apologize if this has already been covered. If it has, I haven't
seen it.
My issue is that I rebooted my Fedora 12 system recently. Nepomuk
started up just like it is supposed to. Unfortunately, the Nepomuk status
window said that something like 6,000 to 7,000 files had been indexed. I
checked my music collection, and sure enough, the mp3's that I checked were
not showing metadata in the expected location in Dolphin. So, it looks
like for some reason, Nepomuk started re-indexing my files.
That was the bad part. This is a kind of odd part: before I had over
25,000 files indexed, and the size of my Nepomuk Store was 3.2 GiB. So, I
rebooted, Nepomuk started re-indexing my files, BUT the Store size was
still 3.2 GiB. So I "assume" that my database had not been destroyed, but
Nepomuk just started re-indexing my files for some reason... Also, like I
said earlier, the metadata that had been displayed in Dolphin before I
rebooted was gone after I booted back up. But, my Store size was still the
same...
Anyway, has anyone else had this issue? I will attempt to look for bug
reports to attach my comments to. If I don't find any, please let me know
the exact component to file this particular issue under.

Sorry for the late response, I was away from mail for a few days.
So, I don't think I said 'hardcoded'. I don't care how hard or soft you
code it. The point is that it should be the responsibility of the
desktop environment to ensure that a polkit agent is available, not the
responsibility of individual apps or of polkit itself.
For GNOME, I'll simply move the polkit-gnome-authentication-agent
autostart file from polkit-gnome to gnome-session. (gdm already ships
its own autostart file for the login session).

No. Again, the responsibility for starting the agent lies with the
desktop, not with polkit. I frankly don't care if you 'build your own
desktop'. In that case, your favourite polkit agent is just one more
thing to throw in your .Xclients file.

phonon-backend-vlc for testing
by Rex Dieter
some initial experimental vlc/phonon-backend-vlc (snapshot) packages are
available in f12/f13 unstable repos.
Enjoy.
I've also got srpm copies of these at
http://rdieter.fedorapeople.org/rpms/vlc/
for you hackers out there.
Next task is to work on splitting vlc into fedora'able and
patent-encumbered/rpmfusion parts. I'll be trying to catch kwizart over
the weekend to try to coordinate efforts and get things into official
repos asap.

Krunner gotten sticky with the last two release
by Arthur Pemberton
Is this because I am using F11 still? Because it feels like my KDE
desktop is falling apart.
Krunner has gotten very slow (relative to its previous performance two
udpates ago). And annoyingly it loads open window entries before app
launcher entries
So it is now quicker to go the Favourites menu and click on kwrite
than to Alt+F2, type kwrite and launch a new instance... and that's
when it works.
Othertime it seems to be blocking on something, which is weird since
it definitely loads the results asynchronously.
Just while writing this email, I stuck krunner by doing the follow:
=
=20 4
=20 * 4
=20 x 4
And when it is stuck, it obscures the potion of the screen it's over
till seconds or minutes later it catches up.

Unable to automatically set time
by John Aldrich
When I attempt to enable the automatic time setting, it will let me get as
far as setting the NTP server I want to use, but then it comes up and gives
me an error that it can't contact the NTP server. Any suggestions? I *am*
behind a DSL router, and if need be, I can put an exception in the firewall
to allow NTP, but I shouldn't need to as I think it allows anything
*outbound* and restricts *inbound* connections.
