yum update failure with kde packages
by George R Goffe
Howdy,
I ran across this error today and was wondering if there's a problem with these packages or if I have blundered somehow.
Any/all hints/tips/suggestions would be most greatly appreciated.
Regards,
George...

You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest

Fwd: In praise of Windows
by John Aldrich
I thought I'd forward this here for discussion as it seems to be more "on-
topic" here than in the regular Fedora Users' list. :-)
I think the OP has some good points. That being said, I don't use NM much,
once I've got a system configured. On the other hand, I think that something
akin to the classic Windows XP "Control Panel" interface is a bit more
"intuitive" at least for those of us who have to use/support Windows on a
regular basis.

To: users(a)lists.fedoraproject.org
Am I alone in finding the old (classic) Windows XP control panel
greatly superior to the KDE analogue?
I find Windows' My Computer much better
than any Fedora counterpart, too.
The network interface through the "Connect to" icon
is also more intelligible than the NM interface, in my view.
On the whole I find Fedora/KDE much pleasanter to use than Windows,
which I suppose I use about 5% of the time.
In particular I find if something goes wrong in Windows
it is far more difficult to correct.
But there are several features where Windows wins, as I have suggested.
I hope the Fedora/KDE developers look carefully at Windows,
to see what they can steal.

Thoughts on floppy disks
by Timothy Murphy
I was recently following the advice in the Fedora-13 Installation Guide
to setup a pxeboot server,
and it recommended that one should read the syslinux documentation
in /usr/share/doc/syslinux-3.84/syslinux.txt .
(Actually, the Guide says syslinux.doc , but that seems to be a typo.)
In any case, this document, which is dated 1994-2009,
seems to be entirely concerned with "CREATING A BOOTABLE LINUX FLOPPY".
There are several other places in the Fedora-13 documentation
where I have come across mention of floppy disks.
(And several Linux programs spend time looking for /dev/fd0 .)
Do floppy disks still exist?
Are computers with floppy drives still being made?
It seems to me that as an absolute minimum
any documentation mentioning floppy drives
should at least explain how CDs can be used to the same end.

amarok not working in 4.5
by Kim Bisgaard
Hi,
I cannot get amarok to start since upgrading to 4.4.80 (not with 4.4.85
either). See buttom part of email for error messages.
It does not seem to be related to the dbus updates as I tried to downgrade.
I have tried switching Phonon backends, without success.
Has anybody else seen this? perhaps found a workaround?

Device Notifier misidentifies iPhone
by Patrick O'Callaghan
On plugging in my iPhone 3GS, dmesg gives me:
usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
usb 1-1: New USB device found, idVendor=05ac, idProduct=1294
usb 1-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 1-1: Product: iPhone
usb 1-1: Manufacturer: Apple Inc.
usb 1-1: SerialNumber: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Furthermore, under VirtualBox I can access the phone, synch it etc. The
VBox USB pop-up also identifies it as an "Apple iPhone".
However the Device Notifier pop-up says it a Sony DCR-SR75, which I
think is a digital camera (the only menu option is "Download Photos with
Digikam"). Clearly some database somewhere is corrupt, but where?
