nntp (aka, usenet) client in kde?
by Gene Smith
I currently use t-bird with an nntp account pointing to gmane to read
this list and sereral others. Does kde have an nntp client program of
any sort? I don't see it as a possible new account type in kmail. Also,
search with kpackagekit yields nothing with "usenet" or "nntp" that is
kde specific.

Oops, my bad, missed some kdenetwork noarch packages in the f17 repo,
fixing now.

best practices for adding/mounting backup drive
by Claude Jones
I've added a drive to my F18 TC1 system.
In Dolphin it immediately appeared under 'Devices' and clicking on it
appears to show it's mounted as "/run/mount/cj/backup disk" with root
being the owner
I want to use this drive as a repository to back up my home directory to...
So, my questions:
Where and how should this drive be mounted?
Should I give ownership to myself as opposed to root?
Is FSTAB still the right file to use for setting up mount points?
On my old F16 system, I had two backup drives, and used FSTAB to mount
them under the /media folder, and gave user ownership to myself, and
group ownership to root, but I have no idea whether that was correct.
Can't seem to find anything in documentation about this subject so
suggestions on best practices and doing this right would be appreciated

KDE sound delays (solved hopefully)
by Colin J Thomson
Hi,
I have been suffering for a lag in the sound events for a few releases now
which seemed to be getting progressively worse, up two/three seconds at times.
I thought I would give kde 4.9.90 a test so installed F18 RC and in the
meantime updated to 4.9.95. Alas the problem was still there.
Over the past months I had been working to try and find a solution to this and
scouring kde.bugs but never came up with an answer until now.
Today I read that Pulseaudio 3.0 had been released so I rebuilt the F19 RPM
and success! the terrible delays have gone :-) still testing but it looks
promising.
Maybe this will help others who have such bad delays in the sound events.

apps in menu configured to start as root no longer do
by Claude Jones
Apps such as Krusader-root-mode and Ksystemlog which are configured to
run as root will no longer start. I'm running F18 TC1 but I decided to
ask here first as I've seen this behavior before with KDE menu items,
but can't remember the fix. Normal behavior is to get an authorization
dialog and after entering the root password, the apps would start. This
was working yesterday. Now, I just get the spinning wheel in the task
bar for a few moments and then nothing. I've looked at logs but I can't
find any evidence of why this is failing. If I run the same commands
from the command prompt as root, they open just fine.

How to install both KDE & GNOME with Fedora 18
by Sonic
Hi,
I've always used Fedora DVDs (as opposed to the live CDs) for
installation as I could install both KDE & GNOME and a slew of other
packages without connecting to the internet. I tried F18 beta DVD and
found that I could select either KDE or GNOME and not both during
installation.
Is this OK from a KDE perspective? I'm a strong KDE user, but I wish to
have GNOME installed too. So, what is the recommended way to install
both? Should I install KDE desktop from Anaconda and then install GNOME
using Yum later? Or should it be the other way round?
So far, Fedora didn't offer any easy way to install more packages from
the DVD after installation. The user has to mount the DVD and create a
repo file and do some yum command line vodoo for installing stuff off
the DVD.
What is the recommended action plan for F18?

Got task switcher color icons back
by Gene Smith
I have been trying off and on for some time to fix the alt-tab "layout
based switcher" in compact view to show color on the icons listed. At
some point (kde 4.8?) they became all gray making it hard to tell one
from the other. I could find no configuation option that affected this.
Then I found this article with a simple 2 line patch to 2 files that
fixes the problem. It is here:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/134183/any-way-to-get-colored-icons-in-alt...
In case the link goes away, the patch is attached.
Just edit the two files in /usr/share/kde4 (as root), log out and back
in to kde and you have the nice color icons again when you do alt-tab in
compact or informative mode.
I am running f16 with kde 4.8.5.
