nntp (aka, usenet) client in kde?
by Gene Smith
I currently use t-bird with an nntp account pointing to gmane to read
this list and sereral others. Does kde have an nntp client program of
any sort? I don't see it as a possible new account type in kmail. Also,
search with kpackagekit yields nothing with "usenet" or "nntp" that is
kde specific.

qt-4.8/kde-4.10 (hopefully) for rhel6 coming soon
by Rex Dieter
folks have repeatedly asked about newer/featureful kde builds for rhel6
over the years, and I've put off mostly due to lack of interest and
time... until yesterday.
Making some good progress, so our mostly empty rhel6 kde-testing repo
should see some significant content showing up over the next week or so.
Warning: It'll be rough initially, we're at the "it builds! ship
it..." stages, so copious testing and feedback would be greatly appreciated.
My strategy so far is to minimize upgrading core el6 packages as much as
reasonably possible. We'll see how far that takes us.

KMail with mBox format
by Timothy Murphy
I'm running Fedora-18 with KDE.
I'm accessing mail from the mBox file /var/mail/tim
and this is working fine.
(I was previously trying to access mail from /var/spool/mail/tim
which is linked to /var/mail/tim but that did not work.
Evidently KMail has some problem with linked files?)
The only problem I have now is that mail that I delete with KMail,
eg mail deleted by my spam filter,
is not deleted from the mBox file /var/mail/tim .
Is there any KMail setting that will allow this?
If there is none, is there any way outside KMail of doing this?
It seems incidentally that I cannot include the mBox email
in "Local Folders" on KMail.
This seems to be set to an maildir setup
at /home/tim/.local/share/local-mail ,
which I am not using and as far as I can see cannot delete,
at least within KMail=>Settings .
Maybe I have to do something within System Settings?
Any advice or suggestions gratefully received.

qmake/Qt 4.8 on RHEL6 - mtune=atom
by Syam Krishnan
Hi
I've been testing Rex's build of Qt 4.8 (and KDE 4.10) on a CentOS 6 VM.
When I tried to build QtCreator, I found that the gcc arguments were
march=i686 mtune=atom.
I tried to see where 'atom' option was coming from but it wasn't from
QtCreator sources. I created a small Qt test project and found that the
Makefile generated after running qmake-qt4 has mtune=atom in the
compiler options. The sample project and the makefile is attached.
The VM has Core i5 CPU (2 cores; the host has 4 cores). I'm attaching
/proc/cpuinfo of the VM.
I'm also attaching the output of "g++ -Q -v" when run on a C++ source
file (that contains just an empty main function) on the VM. That output
says that the options were march=i686 & mtune=generic.
Can anybody tell me why 'mtune=atom' is generated by qmake?
regards,
Syam

Install package without admin rights?
by Martin Kho
Hi,
In Fedora 19 RC2 I installed the rekonq browser using apper. Is it a new
default that I can do this as a normal user (not being root or user with
admin permissions)?
Thanks,
Martin Kho

Can't login after booting from Fedora 18 KDE Spin Live
by Vojtěch Rýznar
Good day, I have downloaded and burned on DVD image
Fedora-18-x86_64-Live-KDE.iso. After booting from the DVD a login screen
appears where user name 'liveuser' is filled in and password is blank.
I'm not able to log in. I tried blank password and passwords like root,
liveuser, demo but it always brings me back to the login screen. Please
advise. Thank you in advance. Vojta

Qstars fix
by Colin J Thomson
Hi,
After installing Qstars:
qstars-0.4-12.fc19.x86_64
qstars-kde-0.4-12.fc19.x86_64
qstars-xscreensaver-0.4-12.fc19.x86_64
I could not see it listed in the System Settings > Display and Monitors >
Screen Locker.
Running kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental it threw up an error (missing trailing
semicolon) in the qstars.desktop file.
I made some other changes to the qstars.desktop file as well (which I think
is from qstars-kde) and it is now listed and works.
The changes where in this section:
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Service
X-KDE-ServiceTypes=ScreenSaver
Name=QStars
Exec=qstars
Icon=kscreensaver
X-KDE-Category=Miscellaneous
Actions=Setup;InWindow;Root;
I know it is old an not supported by the author anymore but maybe others have
missed this cool screen saver :)

KMail local folder
by Timothy Murphy
I have a large amount of old emails
in /var/spool/mail/tim/ on my laptop.
I have created a KMail account
specifying the MBox file /var/spool/mail/tim/.
I have chosen Lock method: None
I found there was already a Local Folders account
pointing to a Maildir folder at ~/.local/share/local-mail
which in fact is empty.
So I called the new account alice
(the email comes from in.alice.it).
Unfortunately after setting up the MBox account as above
I do not see the email in the /var/spool/ folder.
It is clear that I do not understand KMail accounts properly.
Could some kind soul please enlighten me.
Should I perhaps delete the old "Local Folders" account,
and use this name for the new account.
Or is that irrelevant?

Multiple Copies of plasma-desktop starting on Fedora 19
by George Galt
I just installed Fedora 19. I am running the latest kernel and the 319
nvidia driver. Oddly enough, 2 copies of plasma-desktop seem to start, and
I have to go in a kill the second copy, otherwise I simply have a blank
screen. I've looked around to try to figure out what is causing the second
copy of plasma-desktop to start, but I'm not really sure where to look.
Any ideas on where to start?
George
