nntp (aka, usenet) client in kde?
by Gene Smith 07 Feb '20

I currently use t-bird with an nntp account pointing to gmane to read this list and sereral others. Does kde have an nntp client program of any sort? I don't see it as a possible new account type in kmail. Also, search with kpackagekit yields nothing with "usenet" or "nntp" that is kde specific. -gene

F22 comments
by Patrick O'Callaghan 05 Jul '15

05 Jul '15

Just installed F22 using fedup from F21. See the Users list for a couple of general comments. Regarding KDE: 1) The Plasma session restore bug is still present. 2) SDDM is still broken (no gnome-key support) so I use KDM. Luckily it still works on F22. 3) I get a crash report on each login from kf5-kactivities. I have no use for Activies in Plasma but the package can't be removed because of Plasma dependencies. poc

KDE session pauses
by Roderick Johnstone 02 Jul '15

02 Jul '15

Hi Since this morning, me and my users have been seeing pauses in our KDE sessions on F22. Symptoms are that typing in a terminal stops for a second or two every few minutes (at irregular intervals). Sometimes the pause is longer than other times. You can still move the windows around. Active pings to other hosts also pause but eventually write the expected output as if nothing had happened - normal ping times, no lost pings. I've done a lot of tests and think I've eliminated network hangups to the nis server and home disk hang ups (home disk are local but looked up over NIS). Everything works as normal in an XFCE session, its KDE thats affected. It seems that konsole and emacs i/o thats paused. Probably other termianls/editors would pause too but I haven't tried them. BBC news channel also goes buffering for a moment, but with the spinning symbol. There were no obvious KDE updates last night, just a handful of other packages. Anyone else seeing this kind of behaviour? Thanks Roderick Johnstone

lock screen serious problem with sleep
by Neal Becker 30 Jun '15

30 Jun '15

I have 2 monitors (laptop + external). If I close laptop lid, system will sleep. Now disconnect hdmi to monitor. Now open lid. lock screen is displayed. But there is no way to enter the password. I can move mouse around. Caplock is responded to. But I can't enter any characters into the password field. Only thing I can do is switch to VT, and do systemctl restart sddm.

Camera recognition / device notifier

In KDE4 when I plugged in my Canon DSLR it would show up in the device notifier and I could start digikam. In the new plasma5 system nothing happens when the camera is plugged in. How do I get device notifier to do the same is in KDE4? Also, if you bring up "Device Notifier Settings" and click in the area above "keyboard shortcuts" you will get a message saying Error: Could not load: file:///usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.devicenotifier/contents/ui:-1 File not found What is that about? -- Sorta what I want to say when folks habitually complain about Fedora - https://youtu.be/ZArl8fTfub4

plasmashell oddities
by Ed Greshko 28 Jun '15

28 Jun '15

I've experienced a couple of oddities with regards to plasmashell that I A) Wonder if anyone else has seen and B) how to capture information for debugging in the event something similar happens again. These have only happened one time each but they still "bug" me as I think they, or something similar, may happen again. 1. Everything disappeared from the systray. It I could still see the outline but nothing else. Restarting plasmashell brought everything back. 2. I run dual monitors. Suddenly the background and the Home and Trash icons were gone. I though the display had been powered off or when to sleep. However, I could drag a konsole window to the "blank" display and it displayed just fine. Again, restarting plasmashell brought everything back. Currently running plasma-workspace-5.3.0-4. Restarting selected apps
by Patrick O'Callaghan 28 Jun '15

28 Jun '15

This morning I updated my system as usual (using dnf on F22) and one of the packages changed was xapian-core-libs. Dnf suggested I manually restart baloo_file and dolphin. Two thoughts: 1) Given that baloo_file is started automatically, I don't know how to restart it manually. Just executing the command gives: $ baloo_file Bananana Error Serious Error: Error opening table `/home/poc/.local/share/baloo/file//termlist.': Unable to read revision from /home/poc/.local/share/baloo/file//termlist.baseA Unable to read revision from /home/poc/.local/share/baloo/file//termlist.baseB DatabaseOpeningError: Error opening table `/home/poc/.local/share/baloo/file//termlist.': Unable to read revision from /home/poc/.local/share/baloo/file//termlist.baseA Unable to read revision from /home/poc/.local/share/baloo/file//termlist.baseB I've no idea what any of that means. In fact I have only a vague idea that baloo has something to do with desktop search, a facility I absolutely never use. The only time I ever hear from it is when crashes, which is several times a day. Removing it would only seem to remove a bunch of kde-pim apps which I don't use either. Is this safe? 2) Dolphin is part of my normal session start-up, so there must be a record of how I want it to look without me having to kill it and recreate the various windows by hand (or log out and in again). It would be nice to be able to do that via a Plasma menu or even a Shell command. Does anyone think this is worth an RFE? poc

digikam/kmail in kde4 EL7 COPR

GTK font sizes

Is there anyway to control the font size of GTK+ applications in the new plasma5 environment? Use to be in system-settings within fonts you checked that GTK+ applications should use the KDE settings but that no longer exists. Also, if you go into GNOME and use gnome-tweak-tool you can change the settings but they are not picked up going back to KDE. See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1225142 pyhoca-gui icon does not appear in KDE system tray on Fedora 22. This appears to be due to a shift in system tray implementations. Window redraw issues after latest Kf5 updates
by Patrick O'Callaghan 22 Jun '15

22 Jun '15

This morning I updated my F22 system (only stable Fedora repos), which included multiple Kf5 packages. After rebooting, I find that window redraws are frequently messed up. This happens both on switching desktops and simply raising a window on an existing desktop. Occasionally the switching process leaves traces of the previous desktop on the new one, and windows are only partially redrawn. Both switching and raising are accompanied by rapid flashing between the old and new states for a fraction of a second before settling down. I have an Nvidia graphics card, using the Nouveau driver. AFAIK Kwin was not one of the updated packages. I used to be able to look at /var/log/yum.log or run "yum history" to check, but dnf has changed all that though no doubt it's still possible somehow (the dnf manual is a model of obscurity on this point). poc

T-Bird compose problem - KDE only
by Ed Greshko 18 Jun '15

18 Jun '15

This is a very odd problem. It happens for me on a newly installed F22 as well as an F21->F22 upgraded system. Start an instance of Thunderbird and konsole. In T-Bird pick "write" and then enter several lines of text in the body of the message. Then do an ls or something in knosole to get some text. Copy and then paste this text below the text you've just typed. Position the cursor at the start of the pasted text and hit backspace a few times. Instead of the text being shifted up, a line of text will be deleted. So far, this seems to only happen with text taken from konsole. If I copy/paste text from Chrome I will not see this problem. Can someone try this to confirm? I think it should be a konsole BZ but not certain.
