nntp (aka, usenet) client in kde?

I currently use t-bird with an nntp account pointing to gmane to read this list and sereral others. Does kde have an nntp client program of any sort? I don't see it as a possible new account type in kmail. Also, search with kpackagekit yields nothing with "usenet" or "nntp" that is kde specific. -gene

New default web browser on KDE Spin

Hey all, question for the List: What would it take / whats the protocol to push forward the idea of replacing Konqueror as the default web browser? Konqueror doesn't seem like its going anywhere, and I really think that the user experience would be better served if either Rekonq, or ideally, Firefox were the default browsers. Is there any specific reason that Konqueror has stuck around as the default for so long? --Eric--

KDE plasma desktop totally failed; can't log on

Everyone: Has anyone had a problem like this? For the past several weeks, one of my two F22-KDE machines (a Dell Inspiron 1200 running F22 in the KDE spin) has been freezing up while trying to bring up Plasma and two auto-starting applications. Eventually I could get to a good session, but only after having to log out and log back in once or twice. And sometimes the system would freeze up for no good reason, and I would have to do a hard shutdown--holding down the power button for five seconds. Yesterday, during the most recent big update push (160+ packages), that system froze up in the middle of the update. I have no idea what it was trying to do at the time. I do know it failed to install the latest kernel. I then used the power button to force a shutdown. Ever since then, whenever I try to boot that system, it will boot, all right--to the last kernel before the new one. I get to a login screen. But when I try to log in to a Plasma desktop session, I get a brief message, too brief to read. And then the login screen returns. Result: I cannot start a Plasma desktop session. But: if I designate the Session Type as a Failsafe session, I can get in. I then arrive at a command prompt. Now that would let me do something. I want to know what. And I wouldn't even know what logs you'd need to see--nor how to get them off that system and onto a system that can send e-mail. In sum: I think I can rescue that system. I just don't know how to do it, once I log in to a command prompt. Temlakos

F22 KDE Systray Issue

Does anyone know of an app that can implement xembed feature? My Pidgin IM, DavMail Gateway, Audacious, and many other apps are annoyingly not included in the systry because of KDE not supporting xembed. kdewallet password under Fedora-21/22

I notice that when I re-boot into Fedora-22 I am asked for my kdewallet password; but when I boot into Fedora-21 I am not asked for this. This isn't a serious inconvenience, as I don't re-boot often. But I'd be interested to know the reason for it. Dolphin slow start time and kfileplaces/bookmarks.xml

Today on #fedora-kde, user rom1dep complained about Dolphin (KDE 4) taking ~5 seconds to start. He said that removing .kde/share/apps/kfileplaces/bookmarks.xml .kde/share/apps/kfileplaces/bookmarks.xml.bak solved the problem. Those files contained thousands of lines about old (and no longer used) removable devices. Since I am running Plasma 5 and I was experiencing slow Dolphin start times too, I tried to check how many code lines had my /bookmarks.xml. I saw that it contained 7161 lines, for 228 KiB of disk space. I tried to remove those files, then logged out&in from Plasma, and then I saw that Dolphin required much less time to start. Removing those files did not affect the resources/bookmarks that everyday I use in Dolphin. Do you confirm that removing those files reduces Dolphin start time? Why do they contain all that stuff about unused removable devices? I could see lines of XML code about Fedora 16

Low/critical battery warning

Hello, I have a laptop with F21 running well. I have been trying to get the alerts to work for the battery monitor. Some times they do but most times they do no. Screen dimming will work if the battery is low some times. Pop up message will work sometimes. Audible alarm will work some times. Most times, the only indication that the battery is critical is when the battery dies. I have not found any decent documentation. Battery indication is working with the battery widget on the panel. I did all the configuration from this dialogue. I need to get it working reliably. What do I look for when testing? KDE configuration - How to remove "Places" from file open and file save.

Hello, I have spent over a year trying to figure out how to remove "Places" and recent files from my file open and save dialogues. At work and home, I deal with lots of different files in many different directories (folders) at a time. The "Places" and recent files are more of a distraction and problem than my time is worth. I have tried to use them but due to my work flow, they just don't fit. I prefer to use the keyboard to select the work directories or file names as I can type faster than I can click and refresh the screen. I would like to remove them from the dialogues. I will consider an option to replace the application/widget if needed. Is it possible to remove places? Or is it something I just have to ignore? Thank you. Robin

Cannot disable touchpad under Fedora-22/KDE

I want to disable the touchpad on my Thinkpad-T510 running Fedora-22/KDE . KDE Clipboard issues

For some time I have been having difficulties with the KDE clipboard. For example: if I select text in a Konsole session, right click and select copy, the selected text rarely shows up in the clipboard list. When it does show up, it is NEVER selected. As a matter of fact, if it does get added to the clipboard, it shows up in the second line, with the top line blank. When I do see the "copied" text and click on it, it never get selected selected the first time, and often not on the second or third attempt. This seems to have gotten worse in the last month or so, to the point that cut&paste isn't any fun anymore. Any ideas on where to look to to discover what is going on? On Fedora 21 fully updated, with lots of hardware. Emmett

Fedora-22/KDE clipboard not working

When I highlight text in Fedora-21/KDE it is transferred to the Clipboard, which I can access by the scissors icon ("Clipboard Contents") in my panel. In Fedora-22/KDE the clipboard icon is changed - it looks like 2 sheets of paper but is still called "Clipboard Contents" - and highlighted text no longer appears there. plasmawindowed comic

After fedup to f22 (from f20) I see the kf5 is now active. I have been unable to get a custom plasma comic working that previously worked in f20 (and f21 on another computer). It contains "print" statements that previously were useful in kf4 using command plasma-windowed comic and the printed debug strings appeared in the konsole. However, now with kf5 when I run this (now called plasmawindowed) I only see unversioned plugin detected, may result in instability Unable to load applet "comics" with arguments () (I see the same message regardless of the argument, e.g., plasmawindowed foo.) Is there a way to run and debug a custom comic with kf5 at the command line? Thanks, -gene

Window placement on start, interesting observation.

I run 6 virtual desktops and I keep one reserved for a konsole instance (actually on all desktops) and libreoffice. When starting libreoffice it would always start with the desired width. However, there was always about a quarter to half inch gap between the window border and the top of the display. If I extended it to reach the top, and restarted it would always comeback to the original way with the gap. The bottom is at the top of the systray. To solve this, I moved the whole window to the top of the display. There was a gap at the bottom, so I extended it to the systray to remove the gap. On restart, everything remained as I wanted. -- If I wanted a blog or social media I'd go elsewhere

NFS stuck mounts and frozen panel - faq?

Hi I'm sure this must be a faq somewhere because google finds so much discussion of it over many years, but with no obvious solution. When an nfs mount stops being available unexpectedly, under some circumstances, the panel will freeze. Does anyone know if there is a way to stop the panel freezes happening or which component of KDE is causing it? Thanks Roderick Johnstone

plasmashell interaction with Xorg

I run in a dual-monitor environment. The second monitor is mostly tasked with running video content. Live games from mlb.com as well as the "slingbox" application in Facebook to watch content from a Slingbox located in the US. When everything is running normal the video is smooth and the Xorg process is showing between 33%~40% CPU usage in "top". After sometime, maybe a day maybe longer or shorter, the video will no longer be smooth and it seems like a "swipe" or "scan" video from top to bottom. At that time the Xorg process is showing 90%+ usage in top. Stopping the video application brings Xorg usage to less than 20%. But upon starting again, it will go back up to 90%+. Problem with Panel

Hi On Fedora 21 KDE 4.14.9 All of a sudden, when I maximize apps, the apps are maximizing underneath my panel. My panel is set to always visible. I cannot seem to find the file governing this behaviour. Any ideas how I can fix this? Bluetooth battery levels

Recently I had to log into Gnome 3 (don't ask) and noticed to my surprise that the Bluetooth widget showed the remaining battery charge on my mouse. Anyway, is there a way to do this in KDE? I'd also be interested in reading the level on my BT headphones. poc

Frequent crashes in kdeinit5

I often find that kdeinit5 reports a crash when I log out. Today the same thing happened when I right-clicked on a window title and selected Special Window Settings (the crash happened when I closed the pop-up). The error says: We are sorry, kdeinit5 closed unexpectedly. You cannot report this error, because kdeinit5 does not provide a bug reporting address. Details: Executable: kdeinit5 PID: nnnn: Aborted (6) Time dd.mm.yyyy hh:mm:ss There is a "Debug" option which fails thus: Reading symbols from /usr/bin/kdeinit5...Reading symbols from /usr/lib/debug/usr/bin/kdeinit5.debug...done. done. Attaching to program: /usr/bin/kdeinit5, process 9024 ptrace: Operation not permitted. (gdb) So we have: 1) No way to copy the error text except manually, which I just did. 2) No bug reporting address. 3) Failing gdb, presumably because kdeinit5 runs as root and not the actual user. I had previously added a comment to https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=349651, but I'm not sure that's even the right bug report. Suggestions welcome. poc

Lagging behavior

I can't predict when this will happen and I've not been able to capture any meaningful information. But has anyone seen the following? At times I click on a tab in a browser, or click on the calendar tab of thunderbird, or type in a konsole window and nothing happens. Then as soon as I change to another window, the click I've previously done takes effect.
