nntp (aka, usenet) client in kde?
by Gene Smith
I currently use t-bird with an nntp account pointing to gmane to read
this list and sereral others. Does kde have an nntp client program of
any sort? I don't see it as a possible new account type in kmail. Also,
search with kpackagekit yields nothing with "usenet" or "nntp" that is
kde specific.

I normally have two session open in KDE but don't have that issue. I do
have a fixed Xorg.conf file and that may make the difference.

KMail not working (again)
by Timothy Murphy
When I start KMail I get gobbledygook in the Message window.
When I run "sudo akonadictl restart" I am told akonadi is not running.
I see no way to start it.
=========================
[tim@william ~]$ sudo akonadictl start
[tim@william ~]$ sudo akonadictl restart
Akonadi is not running.
[tim@william ~]$ /bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/akonadi-
root.ZrNeSQ/mysql.socket' (2 "No such file or directory")'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/akonadi-
root.ZrNeSQ/mysql.socket' exists!
[tim@william ~]$ ps aux | grep mysql
tim 1708 0.5 1.5 2568696 127296 ? Sl 17:06 0:05
/usr/libexec/mysqld --defaults-
file=/home/tim/.local/share/akonadi/mysql.conf --
datadir=/home/tim/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/ --socket=/tmp/akonadi-
tim.G41xdj/mysql.socket
[tim@william ~]$ sudo ls /tmp/akonadi-root.ZrNeSQ/mysql.socket
ls: cannot access '/tmp/akonadi-root.ZrNeSQ/mysql.socket': No such file or
directory
=========================
I've been getting the KMail message mix-up for some days,
but have always been able to recover with "sudo akonadictl restar".
But today after the latest updates I get the above.
Any advice or elucidation gratefully received.

Fedora 25 Final blocker status mail #1
by Adam Williamson
Hi folks! The Fedora 25 Final freeze is fast approaching (it's 2016-11-
01), so it's time for a blocker status mail. As there's only five
blockers, I'll skip the tl;dr summary, the mail is quite short anyhow.
Bug-by-bug detail
=================
1. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1378156 - python-blivet - POST
TypeError: Must be number, not str
Funny story - I started writing this mail yesterday afternoon,
got distracted trying to straighten out the three different iSCSI
blockers that were listed at that time, and wound up spending all night
fixing iSCSI. So, I've sent a fix for this, it's going through review
now. We'll need dlehman or vpodzime to merge it and do an F25
build+update, then QA will have to test and karma the update.
2. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1376471 - gnome-shell - POST
global menu can't be used for 15-30 seconds, startup notification stuck, missing item in alt+tab (on wayland)
The POST status here seems to reflect that Florian has attached some
patches to https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=768531
(the upstream bug). Presumably those need reviewing and porting
downstream, CCing Rui as he was mentioned in the RHBZ.
3. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1381996 - libblockdev - ON_QA
TypeError: SynchronizedABCMeta object argument after ** must be a mapping, not NoneType (Intel firmware RAID discovery fails when RAID set is 'migrating')
https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2016-4720fedecc should fix this and just needs karma. You kinda have to build an
installer image (or at least an updates.img, but I'm not sure
libblockdev in an updates.img really works) to test it, though.
4. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1370222 - sddm - NEW
KDE doesn't start if hostname changes during boot due to network (infamous xauth issue)
There does not seem to have been any movement on this since it was
accepted as a blocker on 2016-09-19. We need KDE team to look at it.
5. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1382001 - sddm - NEW
Switching between users doesn't work and freezes the desktop
Similarly there's been no response from KDE team since this was
accepted as a blocker on 2016-10-17. We need them to take a look at it.
That's a pretty short blocker list for 4 days before freeze, which is
great, but there are still some tests we have not run, so QA folks,
please do help make sure all Alpha, Beta and Final tests have been run
on a recent candidate. You can use
https://www.happyassassin.net/testcase_stats/25/ to help you with this
- it shows a 'history' for each test case, it makes it easy to spot
ones that need running. Thanks everyone!

KDE frequently crashing during initialization in Fedora 25 openQA
testing
by Adam Williamson
Hey folks! I did mention this in my mails explaining the 'compose check
reports' to test@ and devel@, but in case anyone isn't following those,
I thought I'd mention it here too.
Lately, openQA tests of Fedora 25 KDE seem to be crashing quite often
during KDE startup. Here are three that crashed just in testing of
today's nightly compose:
https://openqa.fedoraproject.org/tests/44206
https://openqa.fedoraproject.org/tests/44216
https://openqa.fedoraproject.org/tests/44278
As a simple openQA primer, the fact that you see a screenshot of a
black screen with a red border around the screenshot in the thumbnail
sequence, shortly after a screenshot of the KDE startup splash screen,
means the test failed because instead of seeing a clean KDE desktop
(like it was expecting), it saw a black screen. After that it switches
to a console so it can upload some logs for us.
You can watch videos of each test by switching to the Logs & Assets tab
and clicking Video, but that's all they'll show you - at some point
during the test KDE tries to start up but sticks at a black screen. The
subsequent switch to a console is done by the test system by pressing
ctrl-alt-f6 or ctrl-alt-f2, it's not a part of the failure mode. Note
the videos are sped up - in reality the system sat at the black screen
for around 5 minutes in each case (that's the timeout on the 'wait for
a clean KDE desktop to appear' step).
More interestingly on the Logs & Assets tab you can find various
uploaded log files. The most useful one is probably 44216:
https://openqa.fedoraproject.org/tests/44216#downloads
because there you can find an ABRT problem directory for the crash, in
https://openqa.fedoraproject.org/tests/44216/file/_graphical_wait_login
-spoolabrt.tar.gz . You can also find the entire contents of /var/log
in the var_log.tar.gz file.
I'll try looking into this a bit more manually too - see if I can
reproduce it in a virt-manager VM and on bare metal - but it'd be great
if anyone else can help figure out what's going on.
The openQA test VMs are direct runs of qemu (libvirt is not used) with
the 'qxl' graphics driver. openQA interacts with the VM via qemu's
built-in VNC server.

Plasma 5.8.X in Fedora 24
by Aivis Purvinsh
Hello Dear All,
Can I kindly ask if users of Fedora 24 can expect update to Plasma 5.8.x in
near future or it is better to start with F25 beta.
Thank You in advance
