nntp (aka, usenet) client in kde?

I currently use t-bird with an nntp account pointing to gmane to read this list and sereral others. Does kde have an nntp client program of any sort? I don't see it as a possible new account type in kmail. Also, search with kpackagekit yields nothing with "usenet" or "nntp" that is kde specific. -gene

Looking over some broken deps reports, I came across some old packages: kdebindings smokeqt smokekde qyoto (csharp/mono) kimono (csharp/mono) ruby-qt ruby-korundum perl-Qt Of these, the only one that's not a pure leaf package is perl-Qt (debconf- kde depends on it). any comment or objection to considering orphaning most (all minus smokeqt/perl-Qt) or all of these ? -- Rex

kwin / plasmashell not starting

Has anyone else experienced this? Fairly frequently I find that kwin on F25 is not starting on login, there are no window decorations (e.g. title bar) and all new windows start at top left with no apparent way to move them. The solution seems to be to start a console and run "kstart kwin". This morning however I didn't even have a desktop, just a cursor and an otherwise black screen. What was working was that typing brought up the command bar at the top of the screen, so I was able to start konsole. "kstart kwin" and "kstart kwin --replace" didn't seem to achieve anything (though maybe I could have waited longer), eventually tried "kstart plasmashell" and things seemed to run again. This is the nouveau driver. I've had problems on F25 with getting stuck at the splash screen ("K") after login, but adding nomodeset to the kernel line in grub seemed to alleviate that, and I was using nomodeset this morning. -- imalone http://ibmalone.blogspot.co.uk

Ian, your suggestion to type in "kstart kwin --replace" worked if I had a konsole open. Anything I typed was associated with the last application open. Robin

I will try that tomorrow as this is a work computer. My problem seems to occur if the system has gone into sleep mode. I set up a test account for testing a raw, clean account to see if it was related to an old configuration file that I have ran into in the past. KDE is falling apart since going to plasma and F25 has been good most of the time until these black screens have started. Plasma 5.9.3 status

kdesig has been working furiously this week to bring plasma-5.9.3 to fedora. First, plasma-5.9.3 was imported into fedora rawhide. Then, based on that work, we did an initial set of f25 builds in copr: https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/g/kdesig/plasma-5-unstable/ For testing and feedback. If all goes well, we will seriously consider bringing plasma-5.9.x to official fedora updates (and will be an upgrade path from using the plasma-5-unstable copr). One blocker: a new kf5-kirigami2 dependency needs review, https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=kf5-kirigami2 (If more issues come up, I'll create a formal plasma-5.9 tracker bug) Enjoy, and let us know what breaks. -- Rex

change file associations

first: the system settings are becoming less and less over time, in the past there was a option to review and change all file associations from a central point second: it makes me tired that in Konqueror i can change the file associations from the info dialog of a file but changes are not saved correctly, for .ta.xz i have 3 "open with" entries * xarchiver (no longer installed) * kde4-ark (not working - ark -caption "%c" %U) * org.kde.ark (ark %U) the kde4-ark likely was broken because of "-caption" no longer supported, this could i even fix by change the program property, but when i remove anything but the second "ark" entry that is only displayed but not saved frankly over the years i got tired of that damned renames of .desktop files and that change file associations seems to be a persistent problem here and there depending on nobody knows what

Kontact lost GPG support?

With a fully upgraded F25 system, and using kontact-16.12.2-1.fc25.x86_64, Kontact seems to have lost the ability to use my GPG keys. The OpenPGP and S/MIME dropdowns on the Cryptography page are grayed out. LXDE causing KDE problems

Hi, first I'm sorry if this issue is already known. I have an F25 with Gnome, XFCE, LXDE, so I installed the KDE PLASMA through dnf groupinstall So I logged into an KDE session, and I saw some problems with it: The lock screen was missing, just an black screen was shown, I can't even come back to my desktop after lock my screen. The tray icons like telegram and thunderbird (with an extension that shows an icon on tray) was missing. If I close the window the process was killed, It doesnt show up on tray. So I removed KDE, and I even didn't remember that I have installed LXDE, so I removed it also, just to be sure that was and KDE problem I reinstalled KDE again, just for see what will happen, and voilà, KDE is working perfectly. So, can you guys take a look at this? because someone else may pass through this kind of problem in the future. Strange pager appearance

My pager panel has suddenly acquired twin panels. IOW each panel representing a desktop is now side-by-side with another empty panel. The effect is purely visual, i.e. each double-size panel behaves as the previous one did, except it has empty space to the right. My last update to Plasma was on Friday, but I've logged out and in again since then without this happening until now. I attach a small screenshot to illustrate. poc

Getting rid of un-needed GNOME files

I noticed this AM that each time I rebooted my system I would be zombies from tracker. I created a bug here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1432599 I really didn't have a clue as to what it was for anyway, and apparently it is used by GNOME and not needed/used if you are running KDE - so I deleted it. If that was a wrong assumption on my part, please advise. Which brings me to my question... does anyone have a list of stuff that is unneeded by KDE but installed by default by Fedora Workstation? It's not a matter of filespace (or even processing power I suppose in most cases). What I'm concerned about is that if something has a bug and I start investigating and spinning my wheels and find that I don't use or even need the package in the first place - like tracker.

KDE on QEMU/KVM v.s. GNOME

If I install GNOME from the LiveDVD and then run it under QEMU/KVM the login and user displays will automatically resize as I expand/contract the VM's window. I cannot find a way for KDE to behave in a similar fashion. I can login and then select a larger display size to get near to what I would want. However, it would be nice to have it resize automatically and arbitrarily as GNOME is doing. From what I could gather spice-vdagent is supposed to interact with the desktop to allow this. One bugzilla that I found had a comment which put it this way... spice-vdagent used to be doing something like this, but this was racing with desktop environments keeping track of the current resolution/monitors/.., so we are now informing the desktop environment that a resolution change would be desirable, and let it handle it. So, is this plasma5 just deciding not to allow auto/arbitrary resizing? -- Fedora Users List - The place to go to get others to do the work for you

Windows key to launch menu stops working

I discovered in a recent update that KDE now directly supports the "windows" key for launching the start menu. So I removed ksuperkey and the auto-start entry, and everything works fine! Except that after some time, it stops working. So far I haven't been able to pin down a specific action that causes it to break, but I am trying to do so. Has anyone else seen this?

Hi I've been seeing a few problems updating kde packages on my Fedora 24 systems for a few days now. Examples of the problems are listed below. kmail no longer works

There was a gpgme update last night and this morning I notice that kmail doesn't work any longer. Broken task switcher rendering

Hi Is anyone else experiencing broken task switcher rendering? I.e. the shadow of the task switcher frame renders, but the contents is missing (reps. just what was previously rendered on the screen), like [1]? Same behaviour if you drag a window to a window corner. Seeing this on Rawhide and two generations of Intel IGPs (Ivybridge and Skylake). Started probably two-three weeks ago. Sound management seems to be broken.

Hello, I have been having problems related to my Plasma 25 install on multiple levels. 1. Sound is unclear and there is a lot of noise. I also hear random crackle/blip from time to time. There a blip I hear when I connect my earphones. This all seems like a hardware problem to me. Possibly the speakers on my 2 month old system have give up. I tried older ISO to see if it is a software problem but it occurs on older version of Fedora and Ubuntu too. That being said the biggest problem is software based. 2. The earphone detection is broken. It has a mind of its own. It may or may not recognize my earphone. I have to either kill pulseaudio or restart session to get sound. 3. Audio settings tell me there are three recording devices on my system - Internal Microphone, Microphone, and Headphone Microphone. The first and last one makes sense but not the Microphone. Which device is it? Do you guys have similar experiences or ideas on how to fix it?

ksnapshot slightly broken in Plasma 5.9.3?

I've updated 2 systems to Plasma 5.9.3 and ksnapshot seems slightly broken. I could not get a snapshot of "Window Under Cursor" no matter what I did I got Full Screen. In the case of one system with dual monitors I got both screens. I changed Window Behavior to "Click to focus" just in case. That made no difference. I tried this on a VM that had not been updated and it works as expected. So, I think the Plasma update is causing this. -- Fedora Users List - The place to go to get others to do the work for you

Problem reading "Fedora rawhide compose report" messages on kmail

Hi, I have a problem reading the "Fedora rawhide compose report" from the devel and test fedora mailing lists on kmail. The problem is that it can take a long time to display those message. At least more than 5 minutes. I am not sure if the problem is the length of message or something else. This only started to happen recently, in the last month or so. I do not remember exactly when this started to happen. Those are the only messages where I have this problem. I have yet to find other message where this happens. And even for this messages since they come from a mailing list and kmail is able to retrieve the details, it is enough to right click over the message immediately and choose the option to read in the web "Open the message in the mailing list archive (web)". Libreofice presenter crashes my laptop every couple of hours

Hi all; I'm running Fedora 25 on a Thinkpad X1 Carbon (4th generation). I have Libreoffice 5.2.6 installed. While working in presenter my laptop becomes unresponsive and then crashes every couple of hours when working on a presentation. Not sure what's going on or even how to try and debug it.
