Compositor fails to start on first login

I've got 2 Fedora 33 systems - one with a Radeon GPU and one with an
Intel GPU. On both systems, the Plasma compositor fails to start on the
first login after a reboot. It starts OK after I logout and log back
in.
Anyone else seeing this?

plasma wayland fails to start

This is on my laptop that's been running kde for 6 years, and I've tested
plasma wayland before more-or-less successfully. But today attempting to
login through sddm fails, just leaving me at the mostly black splash screen.
journalctl says this:
