Well, I figured out what notification was alerting me.  Actually, it was 
two notifications one after the other.  In the system settings under 
Notifications -> System Notifications it was the "Device uplugged" and 
Device plugged in" notifications.  Just turning off the sound was not 
enough.  After doing that I had to log out and log back in again to make 
the notifications stop.
