If you are running Chrome 35 with libappindicator, you will see the default blank sheet of paper icon.  As I mentioned earlier, this is fixed by:
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=362880

That fix is now available in the latest Chrome Unstable (currently Version 37.0.2041.4 dev).  It won't be available in stable until Chrome 37 rolls to stable, which will most likely be sometime in August.

As far as Chrome starting automatically, are you referring to the background apps?

Icons have started showing after installing libappindicator but
without the correct icons as per the bug report. I am still using the
Chrome Stable.

Another problem I am having is that the Chrome won't start
automatically anymore. There is no autostart file. Do you have this
problem?
