i'm new to fedora, let alone fedora 11.
i've installed the full version of fedora 11 and by default got the gnome desktop.
i've done teh yum install system-switch-desktopmanager and switched to kde
i've gone to and downloaded the kde package
i've restarted and get the kde login but when i log into my user i get only screen with a terminal box in the bottom right corner.
i've logged into to su, and cd /etc/sysconfig and nano my desktop file and it has desktop=kde and displaymanager=kde.
how do i get the kde desktop?
when i log out and log in as root, it works fine. only as the user do i get the terminal box.
please help.

Run that command in a terminal window and make sure to do so as root or it will complain.

i've tried the command and here's the result. keep in mind that the kde desktop works if i login in as root, just not when i log in as user
[root@III III] yum groupinstall kde

Read the previous answers again *carefully*. No-one told you to do "yum groupinstall kde".
And please 1) don't top-post on this list, and 2) don't post in HTML. See the Guidelines.

Yes, I don't like it :D And KDE is going through some changes, as it's not a desktop now but KDE community with KDE workspace, applications, people...
Try to change session in GDM/KDM (the login screen). It's preferred way to change it for user.

here's a strange one...
while waiting for the reply, i logged in as root and created a new user to see if i could duplicate the same issue with just a terminal box in the bottom right corner. i restarted and that user worked perfectly, kde desktop came up smoothly. so i logged out and went back in as my original user and it worked perfectly as well. go figure. i know this isn't a fix but it appears to working fine.
thanks for all your help, its been greatly appreciated.

My guess is that you may have selected the "KDE (failsafe session)" the first time.

Actually instead of using that long name you could also use the comps group identifier which is kde-desktop. The following would work just as well.
yum groupinstall kde-desktop

How would the average user be able to discover that, starting from the yum manpage?

Well, the average user might not find that. You can do: python /usr/lib/python*/site-packages/yum/comps.py <(zcat /var/cache/yum/fedora/*comps*) | less
Suggestions for other ways welcome.

I'm on centos but this should work as well on F10/11.

Well, heh, run that command please. It will show you all the stuff possible including what you get if you install it, like: yum install @german-support Thats not what you get with yum grouplist. But it seems there is no list of all the @foo-stuff you can browse easily. Maybe i should make one.

You might confuse something. I wasn't answering your question here. I was the one who answered the OP as first with the correct yum groupinstall instruction. Then we got two shorter sentences to do the same. None was wrong.
So my statement "I just gave him something he can find easily with yum grouplist." was correct. I did gave him that in my first post.
But you got two other answers to your question. One from Diego and i sent you one.

The question was how to discover the alternate name starting from the yum manual page. The correct answer is that the -v option is documented in the man page (though the user would need some imagination to see that this is useful here, given that it describes the option in terms of groupids, which are not defined).
Of course the real question is "why is the KDE environment group not simply called KDE?", but that's a horse of a different colour.

It isnt directly listed. It is just a shorter version that is less prone to mis-typing etc. No more right or wrong than anyone elses answer. However to answer your question the name can be seen using "yum grouplist -v".
