plasms-desktop stops working

Today - the desktop stopped working - all the workspaces compacted to
a single one (i.e. all the programs running piled together).

The panels became unreactive - the K menu would not respond - not
clicking anywhere on the panel.

I attempted to kill and restart plasma-desktop but this gave errors
and no panels appeared - I had to reboot the machine.

This has happened a few times now - is there a known bug with
plasma-desktop?

In this case (unlike previous cases) the CPU was not 100 .. the
system appeared normal in top.

Anyone else having random problems with the desktop?
