Hi Rex,
Any idea on the likelihood of there being a dbus upgrade for F13 that will fix Bug 208921?
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=208921
I tried installing the dbus-1.4 from koji (F14 build), but that drags in the whole of systemd...
Would try upgrading to F14 beta, but it seems somewhat iffy at the moment and this is my main machine.
cheers M.

IMO, miniscule. As I understand it, the required dbus upgrade changes it's (runtime?) semantics slightly, and could cause other ill side-effects.

Well but without libdbus-1.4 working with KDE-4.5 is really painful. Crashing kde components (dolphin, plasma) and Dolphin hangs are quite common.

In fairness,
1. the issues you raise aren't particularly specific to kde-4.5, 4.4 also suffers as well.
2. the items hit the most are disabled by default, like a. the krunner nepomuk plugin b. dolphin's nepomuk-related panel/pane (forget what it's called exactly).
a/b are the only examples that I'm aware of that we've documented. If there are others, please do enlighten us, so we can also track those issues as well.

* Bug 232054 - Dolphin often hangs since the KMetaData merge (I experience this with dlophin's nepomuk-related panel disabled) * Bug 233632 - spontaneous plasma crash in dbus code (experienced a few times) * Bug 208921 - Dolphin Qt-dbus random crashes (Nepom...
It might be kde-4.4 is also affected, however I haven't noticed a single time. With kde-4.5.2 + fedora-13-updates-testing at least my system still doesn't work smooth.
Thanks, Clemens

This one seems to be quite a hodge-podge of issues. *one* of them may be dbus related. will watch.
- Bug 233632 - spontaneous plasma crash in dbus code
reported against kde-4.4.1
- Bug 208921 - Dolphin Qt-dbus random crashes (Nepom...
This one looks legit, but I *thought* we had default dolphin/nepomuk options set to avoid or minimize this (ie, tooltips should be disabled by default too). Any hints?
Fwiw, I can't remember the last time I experienced any sort of crash using kde-4.5.x on my f13 box (though in fairness, I use dolphin only ocassionally).
Now, even though we do our best to side-step the bad cases, this dbus-thing *is* a legitimate issue. Consider me convinced it would be worthwhile to provide some sort of dbus-1.4 builds for feedback and testing. I'll see about getting something into -unstable repo for those individuals who want it.

Ended up trying out using repos.fedoraproject.org for this, enjoy.
Excellent Rex, many thanks.
I do get a dependency thing though:
--> Running transaction check ---> Package dbus.x86_64 1:1.4.0-0.1.fc13 set to be updated --> Processing Dependency: systemd-units for package: 1:dbus-1.4.0-0.1.fc13.x86_64 ---> Package dbus-debuginfo.x86_64 1:1.4.0-0.1.fc13 set to be updated ---> Package dbus-devel.x86_64 1:1.4.0-0.1.fc13 set to be updated ---> Package dbus-libs.x86_64 1:1.4.0-0.1.fc13 set to be updated ---> Package dbus-x11.x86_64 1:1.4.0-0.1.fc13 set to be updated --> Finished Dependency Resolution Error: Package: 1:dbus-1.4.0-0.1.fc13.x86_64 (fedora-dbus-backport) Requires: systemd-units You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
Any thoughts on how to work around that? cheers M.

Ugh, sorry I didn't actually try installing these. looks like they snuck in some f14-specific dependency in there. I'll have to fix that.

OK, try it again now. Refreshed the repo with new builds that omit the systemd bits.

Works great on F13 now.
Solves the dolphin random crashes, and maybe subjective, but a lot of things (like the task bar) seem snappier.
Thanks a lot for your help M.

Thanks, works great here too (F13) :)
