KMail and Kontact do not seem to provide their Handbooks on my laptop (Fedora-24/KDE), although they are available online. Can I find a Fedora package or RPM with the Handbooks?
Alternatively, where exactly are the KDE Handbooks stored? I have the KNode Handbook on the laptop, but couldn't find where it is kept. ("lsof | grep -ir knode" found nothing, with the Handbook open. Is there a way of finding out where a page one is looking at is stored?)
I guess if I knew that, I could download the online ones, and access them by clicking on the Help button.

The documentation are part of the various kdepim packages. I see that the kmail handbook is in the kmail package:
Where does the system fail to show them? Do they not show in KHelpCenter?

Under /usr/share/doc/HTML/<lang>/, at least for now.

No, the online one are in a different format.

Thanks for your response: however,
When I go to KMail=>Help=>KMail Handbook I am told "The requested documentation was not found on your computer."

I do not find anything about Kontact or KMail in /usr/share/khelpcenter/
This appears to be the same RPM that I have installed: /var/log/dnf.rpm.log:Jul 17 12:57:24 INFO Upgraded: kmail-16.04.3-1.fc24.x86_64
I have the KNode Handbook on the laptop, but couldn't find where it is kept.
Under /usr/share/doc/HTML/<lang>/, at least for now.
When I go to /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kmail/ I see some .docbook files, eg using-kmail.docbook, but I have no idea how to read these under Fedora. As far as I can see, I have to convert it to HTML or PDF.
In any case, the KMail Handbook does not seem to be there, unless this is a much shorter version than the online one.

I can confirm that at least some handbook files appear to be present, but khelpcenter does not display it when doing Help -> KMail handbook ...
What *does* work, is in khelpcenter now, enter 'kmail' in the search box, and one of the items listed is: The KMail Handbook.

Thank you, Rex. I see both the KMail and Kontact Handbooks are available if I go to Applications and enter khelpcenter. I see now that it is also available by just typing "khelpcenter".
But neither is available by clicking the Help button in KMain or Kontact; one is told that the documentation is not available on the computer, and advised to look in https://docs.kde.org/. This seems to me to be a minor bug.

So: - kmail defines itself internally as "kmail2" - the documentation is the documentation for "mail" - the desktop file for kmail (installed under /usr/share/applications/ org.kde.kmail.desktop) correctly specify the key X-DocPath=kmail/index.html - then probably the key above is not considered right now. Possible candidate: the handler for help:/ defined inside kguiaddons, src/ util/urlhandler.cpp
Regarding kontact, the usual "Help" menu does not even appear. According Laurent it is a known bug but lower priority than other issues.
Ciao

Thanks for the response. I've posted this as Bug 365894 - KMail(2) documentation not available
But I am not hopeful of a rapid reply. As I understand it from your response, there is a file somewhere in the system specifying "kmail" rather than "kmail2". I assume this has been the case since 2011 when kmail2 came out.

It's not a kmail bug, I'm reassigning it to one of the involved component.

No, only from the Frameworks version, because X-DocPath is not properly considered apparently.

have you considered running a 'locate kmail' on your system?
as an example to find and save location of the 'doc/HTML/en' files;
locate kmail|grep doc/HTML/en >locate-kmail-doc.000
above locates all english doc files for kmail.
/usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kmail /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kmail/common /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kmail/configure.docbook /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kmail/credits-and-licenses.docbook /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kmail/faq.docbook /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kmail/getting-started.docbook /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kmail/importing.docbook /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kmail/index.cache.bz2 /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kmail/index.docbook /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kmail/intro.docbook /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kmail/menus.docbook /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kmail/using-kmail.docbook /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kontact/menu-bar-kmail.png /usr/share/doc/HTML/en/kontact/settings-menu-kmail.png
using <f1> while in 'konqueror browser', i opened 'KDE Help Center', which opened to;
Application Manuals > Internet > Konqueror
3 lines above 'Konqueror' is 'KMail'. listed under 'KMail' are heading that relate to above files found with 'locate'.
maybe this will help get you to what you are wanting.
much luck.

If you use KHelpCenter, you don't need to know where the files are, and the naming could also be misleading. In fact the documentation we are talking about is available from KHelpCenter.
The problem here is different, there is a regression in handling of a special key in the application desktop file which points to the documentation. So usual Help->xyz Manual menu entry does not work.

I did indeed try "locate" (and "grep"), and mentioned that I found these .docbook files, but could not find any Fedora application to read them. I also thought they were too small to be the KMail Handbook, but I could have been mistaken about that.

Apologies, I meant to cancel this post, which does not add anything to the discussion; but I was told I could not, as I was not author of the article.
