KMess rpm?

Hello everybody!

Is anybody willing to create a spec file for KMess 2.0 beta2? It would 
be really nice to have it in kde-unstable, it's by far one of the most 
active MSN clones out there and its development pace is ultra-rapid! 
It's a real pain that no rpm is available for Fedora.

Building a KMess package

The rpmbuild command is suitable for distibutions using the RPM package
format. This includes distributions like SuSE, Mandriva, Redhat and Fedora.
A KMess RPM package can be created with the command:

rpmbuild -tb kmess-<version>.tar.gz

The rpmbuild command runs a full source-based installation, but builds a
package instead of installing KMess. The final package can be found in a
subfolder of /usr/src/packages/ or /usr/src/rpm/. You can use that package
to install KMess.

If you have a clean, newly-installed system, without any KDE upgrades, you
can share the package with others. Make sure users can always download the
source package too, as required by the GPL license. However, we recommend
to use our KMess Installer whenever possible.

Tip: when you install the autopackage-devel tools before building the RPM
package, the rpm spec script uses apbuild to create a cleaner binary.

I put a i586 version for f11 in my repository. Please note this is the
new version based on qt4.

Simply time. During the last year I had a lot work to do (thesis etc.)
and it is much easier for me to create packages without having review
them or going to the meetings. Using fedora cvs is causing quite lot to
read and causes quite some work on organisation. Time I didn't had
during the last year. Additionally most of the packages was cutting edge
and not suitable for common use. Some packages was already used to make
them "official" and if there is someone willed to take over a package
into the official onces, I will stop support for them at once. I am
currently moving into a new job and I am not sure how much spare time
this will offer. If I have some, I'll might come to the meetings and
help on make some packages avaible for the official ones. However, the
repository is currently just for testing purposes, friends or interested
fedora followers.

Thanks Florian for the package!

I tested it in F10 and it works almost fine:
- clicking on the rpm opens up PackageKit which does its magic and 
installs the needed dependencies;
- the program is in the menu and opens up just fine.

Unfortunately it cannot authenticate in the server. I thought that maybe 
some authentication-related dependency could be missing, I searched for 
the dependencies:

and I found that I was missing qca-ossl package.

I tried to take a look at the spec file but the link you provided asks 
for password...

That's stange. In fact in the thread you give, the developer is saying
that this is a build requirement, not a runtime requirement. Did I get
your correct, that it works, if you install "qca-ossl"? In fact I would
expect the package called "qca2-ossl", but ... I am pushing a new
version with the package as requirements and will play with mock
tomorrow a little bit.

Sorry, forget to post. Simple use "guest" as username and use an empty
password. Additionally I uploaded the srpms to the repository location.

That uses the upstream specfile. While I haven't checked this particular
one, those tend to be absolute crap in general. They are often
autogenerated, often use some bizarre hacks to autogenerate file lists and
generally try to support every RPM-based distro under the sun (which tends
not to work reliably). The fact that they try using autopackage tools
during an RPM build also makes me shout "WTF???!!!".

Yes, but a beta tester also says that:
"runtime dependencies: KDE 4 libs (kdelibs5), QCA2 and the openssl 
plugin (libqca2?, libqca2-ossl?), libXScrnSaver (libxss?), the Oxygen

Yes, just after installing qca-ossl authentication starts to work right.

I agree... strange numbering. Maybe because qca and qca2 are both in use 
by different programs while only qca-ossl 2 is in use? It bumped 
directly from 0.1 to 2.0 beta...

Seems from comments that there is quite big demand for KMess in Fedora 
repository, I can import your package to Fedora (review process, maintaining) 
but I need either some help from real MSN/KMess users as I'm using mostly 
Jabber/ICQ and Kopete.

Okay, I made up my mind. In fact the thesis is nearly finished and the
last time we mailed, I wrote, that I would try to join KDE SIG, if I
have some spare time. So give me a chance to test how much bureaucracy
this means for me ;) If you willed to give me a hand I would make the
packages of my repository (that I would claim "stable") contribute to
the official ones and maintain them. Might be a good chance to get
involved finally... even if I have more and more issues with the latest
fedora politics ;)

However, this would also count for me. I know a real live person using
MSN, however I am not really using it. But Diego will be crying loud if
something wents terrible wrong... I hope ;)

great news! I can guide you through this process, review your packages and I 
can co-maintain them to help you.

I've already made some changes in KMess SPEC file, I'll send you patch or we 
can deal with it in review.

That sound like an deal. Mankind is lazy and will always find a reason
why not doing something. So might be time to get forward ;)
However "kmess" is an application and does involve some more work than a
simple plasmoid. I just put up a review request for a small plasmoid
that might be nice to get familiar with the process, while having some
additional time to get kmess into shape. Also currently my mock seems to
mock up. We still have lots of time... err... 8 days for kmess ;)

Indeed, kmess is mees now :) That's why reviews are so important and annoying 
too :D So please, send it for review because as reviewer I can't work (in time 
of review on that package) but I've found some issues and you know, my 
memory...

Are you already in packagers group or you need sponsorship? If yes, we can ask 
Rex to sponsor you (but I'll do reviews)...

I think KMess will rapidly get quite popular... it's rapidly growing and 
it's getting better than other MSN only clients like aMSN and emesene. 
And of course it uses KDE!

I wonder why its features have not been integrated in Kopete! :-(
Most of my contacts use MSN, but I also have a few contacts that use Jabber, 
Yahoo, ICQ, or AOL, and a lot that use Facebook (Kopete recently got a 
Facebook IM plugin).

I disagree. If the plugin interface of Kopete is not sufficient, it can be 
extended.

Anyway. a lot of features of KMess are independent from the protocol. As for 
MSN specific stuffs, KMess and Kopete MSN plugin could use a common library, 
for the features they can share, and KMess would only extend that with 
features that could not be added to the Kopete plugin.

No, I am complete fresh meat. Bugzilla account exist, a complete fedora
account with cla_done and a idyling request for "Fedora Packager CVS
Commit Group". No sponsor at all. I am currently going throught the tons
of text.

Small correction. I managed to get an koji account, however the
instruction at:

Does not tell anything about .fedora-upload-ca.cert, but google is your
friend... ;)
