Is there a replacement for kprinter (cli to open dialog and print stdin)? I need it for cxoffice.

No (and yes).
KDE4 itself doesn't offer anything like kprinter, yet,,, *but* kprinter is (still) available as part of the kde3 runtime (in kdebase3).
Does that mean that kprinter can be installed alongside kde4? If so, how does that affect the existing print tools?

yes, absolutely... been doing that since F-9, kde-4.0 release. :)

shouldn't affect anything else really.

Sounds good to me. The new interface should be good in time, but it lacks a few really useful things at the moment. Now - File Associations will need changing, I guess, but how?
