Well I had this issue with Unity on Ubuntu, where KDE had

a file, specifically ~/.local/gtk-3.0/settings.ini which caused some
menu items in the Unity system tray to have black fonts on black
backgrounds. So it might help if you look into some sort of GTK
settings.

Thanks. I will look into it. A quick look on a new install doesn't
show my gtk3 settings file in either ~/.local/ or ~/.config/.
