massive qt-demo graphical corruption on F12 + Intel + KMS

[Jud Craft]

Trying to run the Qt-Demo program results in horrible text and
graphical corruption inside the qt-demo window.  (Does not affect the
main GNOME desktop that I run).  Essentially unusable.

This occurs whether using Compiz or plain Metacity.  Has anyone else
encountered this?  May file a bug soon.

Yes, I have, though not with that particular application.   What video
card/driver are you using ?

That's written right there in the text you quoted. (Well, the driver isn't 
written, but that's because there's only one for this hardware: intel. (The 
old i810 driver with BIOS modesetting is no longer in Fedora.))

That's a hint and half of driver bugs.

Who should get the bug?  KMS, xorg-intel?  That deserves to be fixed.
Qt's animation is too cool a tool to not work out of the box.

Reported back during F11.  Looks like it's still having problems.

In my experience, the intel driver for 965 GM is completely broken.   
I'm disappointed, but not surprised, to learn that the situation is not 
resolved in F12. It's very frustrating.

New xorg and intel driver releases come and go, but the brokenness of of 
the intel drivers remains constant.

This has been my release-to-release experience as well, but it's not
as bad as it could be.

It was really abysmal around F9.  At least now, 3D and Compiz and DRI2
and Xvideo work again.  I'm pretty happy with that.

I have no idea what special action qt-demos are doing that is making
the card freak out, though, and I would hope that eventually the dumb
driver would start to stabilize, as oppose to regress.

This is less of a Fedora problem and more of an intel/freedesktop
problem in general.

Funny you say that.  For my and my i945-based box, F-10 was the horrible 
regression (desktop effects became essentially unusable)... and about 
1/2 way through F-11 dev-cycle it magically started working well again. 
  Go figure.

I haven't had any problems with this chip on an HP Compaq 2710p in 
Fedora 10 or Fedora 12 (skipped Fedora 11). i915 driver.

For my GM965, F9 was awful (3D was either slow or triggered assertion 
failures depending on the app/game, e.g. ppracer triggered the assert), F10 
is working great except for the occasional lockup, I have yet to try F11 or 
F12.

that somewhere in our Bugzilla.
