The order of icons in the KDE System Tray seems fairly arbitrary. I imagine it depends on the start-up order of the various pieces that the icons correspond to, but I haven't checked. Be that as it may, it would be nice to be able to re-order them, and for KDE to remember the order, the same way one can re-arrange the Panel icons.
I can't see an obvious way to do this. Any thoughts?

There isn't any way that I'm aware of, for the reasons you listed above

Yeah, my experience indicates start up order. Also, hidden icons get thrown to the end. This is a feature request for upstream.
