KSynaptics is a third-party tool which is completely unrelated to KDE 4.2,
also because it uses the KDE 3 libs. So KDE 4.2 does not change anything
whatsoever with respect to KSynaptics.

For those of us who don't have a hardware solution for this, we need to
consider the options. I presume that for the moment this means that we can
continue to use ksynaptics on hardware that needs it, but once we are in a
totally KDE4 environment it will not work? Do you know of anything in the
pipeline to deal with this annoying hardware lack?

I don't know of anything, Anne.
I've taken a look at the ksynaptics/gsynaptics source code and I've
spoken with the developer. I'm seriously considering taking the guts of
what has been done and converting it to use the Xorg synaptics driver.
The author has started doing this, but it is far from complete.
I think I would write it as a python KDE Widget. Its presently written
in C++ and I don't see the need for that. Gnome people might not like
it if its written as a KDE Widget.
Any thoughts ?

Well, C++ is often preferred by users because
you don't need a whole
VM+runtime (and the footprint that comes with it) for a simle widget.

Well, C++ is often preferred by users because you don't need a whole

If you are running KDE, you most certainly have PyQt installed.
It appears to me that Python is becoming an important language. Many
applications appear to use it.
For most users I think the extra footprint would be nil.

I found something, Anne. It doesn't work on my laptop, but it might for
others.
a) Install the Xorg synaptics touchpad driver. Unfortunately, I don't
think there are any RPMs for Fedora. It builds with a simple make and
su make install. You can get the source from here:

b) Set up xorg.conf correctly.
c) issue a synclient -l to see how everything is set up.
d) do a synclient TouchpadOff=1 to turn off the touchpad.
Step d actually doesn't work on my machine, even though it does change
the parameter setting.
I'm looking into this further. I'm hoping to make this driver the basis
of a PyQt application to fix this problem once and for all.
It would be helpful to me if people tested this driver and let me know
if it works and is stable enough to base an application around it.

It isn't. As a matter of fact, xorg-x11-drv-synaptics is a newer
version of it. I'm trying to figure out why 'yum list *synaptics*'
didn't find that package.

So what is the status of that driver ? Is it stable ? Should it be used
as the basis of a new app ?
I haven't looked at the source code for it yet. Does it use the
libsynaptics library or does it directly talk to the Synaptics device ?

It is what Fedora already uses.
So if Fedora uses xorg-x11-drv-synaptics and its stable and good, what
is the problem with ksynaptics and gsynaptics ? Are they both using
libsynaptics and its broken ?
It looks very straightforward to write a GUI that interfaces with
synclient. As a matter of fact, I've got it started and working from
the command line.

Off-topic, but if you're still unable to list that using the above line,
use quotes for *synaptics*
yum list '*synaptics*'
OR
yum list "*synaptics*"
Without the quotes, if you've any file in the current directory matching
the pattern, your shell may interfere!

Here is a solution that does work on my laptop. The difference between
this approach and the one I previously used is the version of the
driver.
# yum install xorg-x11-drv-synaptics
$ synclient TouchpadOff=1
After this, my touchpad is OFF. I am now in the process of writing a
PyQt gui that manages Synaptics touchpads.
