Maybe I'm missing something... But...

System Settings -> Window Behavior -> Focus -> Show windows list while switching
windows

System Settings -> Window Behavior -> Focus -> Traverse windows on all desktops.

[Alt][Tab] - Seems to work just fine.

I don't find it very useful when I have *lots* of open windows.  I need
to be able to bring up the list and then immediately select the one I
want, not "scroll" through all of them.

Try this after. hitting [alt][tab] keeping holding down the [alt] button and then
selecting the applicaiton with your mouse. Let go of [alt]. Voila.

(I still don't find alt-tab to be as convenient as the middle-click,
but that's a nice tip.)

i agree with that. to make it easier, holding <alt> and repeated pressing
<tab> will step you thru. pressing <alt+shift> and pressing <tab> will
reverse direction.

One other thing that you might want to try if you have desktop effects on is that
if you properly configure either Box Switch or Present Windows, you will be able to see a
nice thumbnail of the applicaiton that you want to switch too.

It also doesn't show all windows in all desktops.  That is, it only shows what
is displayed on the task bar.  So if you have "Only show tasks for the current
desktop" checked, then there is no way to see a list of all open windows.

As I inidicated in a previous post....

System Settings -> Window Behavior -> Focus -> Show windows list while switching
windows

Still not as convenient as the old KDE3 Alt-F5 behaviour (or 
middle-click) . List pops up, single-click the app you want.

Granted. You get used to a way of doing things. But logically speaking. Logically that is.
It really not that much different. The pain in the behind is to remember to hold down the
alt key while selecting the application with your mouse. Be that as it may, I rarely use
such a feature because everything is displayed before me in the task manager on one of my
panels. If you really do have a lot of apps open, you could always try grouping your
applications that way they remain full width. If you use task manager in a panel that is.

What I like much better about the old way is that the applications are 
listed by name. When using the Alt-Tab method only the selected app has 
the name under it and you have to select the app by the preview picture. 
Of course this only happens when using "Box switch" with desktop 
effects. Much better when using the normal Alt Tab. :-)
