Every second time or so I run KDE, the icons on the desktop are not there
and the desktop is empty. Why? I am speaking of icons that are
shortcuts to launch applications. KDE graphical components are still
there.

I know this will be of little value....but....
I've my system configured to have 6 Virtual Desktops and the box is checked for
"Different widgets for each desktop". I have each Virtual Desktop set to use
"Folder View". In 3 of the Desktops, the Location is specified to "Show
the Desktop Folder" and thus the Desktop icons are created from the information in
$HOME/Desktop. The remaining 3 are configured to "Show a place" and get their
information from one of 3 subdirs of $HOME/Desktop.
I have never seen a time where the desktop icons were not shown on a login.
The question I have is.... Are you running another desktop and then logging out and then
logging into KDE? Or, are you logging out of KDE and then quickly logging back in? I ask
that since a while back, more than a year now, If I logged out and quickly logged back in
I would have no audio. If I recall, the pulseaudio daemon stayed alive even after logout
and the new session couldn't get a new one. I'm sure they are not related to your
issue except that maybe there is a "race condition" involved.

logging back in? I ask that since a while back, more than a year now, If I logged out and

When you asked this same question on the Fedora list I suggested you try
setting Restore Manually Save Session in your Session Management
configuration, save a session via the Leave menu, and see what happens.
Have you tried that?

Are you using multiple Activities, or have you configured the default
Activity to have a folder view? Note that the standard desktop
background in KDE is not a folder so you have to enable this. Perhaps
someone more knowledgeable about Activities can chip in here.

I do not know what is an "activity" but yes I am using the "Folder"
view ("Dossier" in French) and in "location" ("Emplacement"
in
French), I chose "Display the desktop folder" ("Afficher le dossier du
bureau").
I know that we can have a component on the desktop showing the desktop
folder but I am not using this.

If, when your desktop comes up empty, you change the "Location" to "Specify
a folder" and choose your "home/Desktop" do your icons reappear when you
click "Apply"?

It does not work. But the icons come back if I change the view to
"Default" and back again to "Folder". But I do not want to have to do
this each time!

Of course you don't want to do it each time. I was just thinking that it may lead to
clue as to what is going on, or not going on.
Nothing pops out at me. Maybe a permissions problem of some sort....stab in the dark.
