Hello there,
A few days ago, I mentioned[1] there is no one behind kadischi's
development team and it will be EOL'ed this saturday.
So today is Saturday 07 July 2007 (in a few minutes it will be 08 July
2007), kadischi's bug review[2] was marked and closed as NOTABUG,
while the remaining 4 open bugs under kadischi's name :
# A first experience ( #222568 )
# Kadischi does not build on VMware hosted OS ( #216151 )
# Kadischi may raise an exception when attempting to copy device
files. ( #211692 )
# Processed: Kadischi build fails if dietlibc is installed ( #167220 )
were closed as WONTFIX.
Therefore, I'm announcing the official EOF of Kadischi. It is sad, but
it is _not_ the end of creation of custom spins at the Fedora Project
since Jeroen van Meeuwen and his friends are actively maintaining
revisor[3]. If you were a kadischi user in the past, you will probably
see revisor as a better alternative.
# I'll like to thank everyone who participated in the kadischi
project: whether by contributing codes
# or by testing, translations, documentation,...
We will still be looking forward to see your contributions at the new
revisor project.
The Fedora Livecd Mailing list[4] is still active and you can still
asked your livecd related questions there. However I don't know what
will be the state of the #fedora-livecd irc channel on freenode. The
average number of people who joined this channel daily is 5 and
there's pretty much no discussions. Well, #fedora-devel is always
crowded.

I didn't understand what you wanted to imply too. However I feel, this
is another stupid RH/fedora troll.
By the way, perhaps I should make it clear. Kadischi hasn't been
dropped, rather no one is working on kadischi.
Dexter, if you want to push kadischi forward, feel free. But, you do
understand not to divide forces, don't you ?
There is no one to blame for kadischi's state.
By the way, ask yourself "who is losing when kadischi is EOL'ed?"
Believe me, no one.
Revisor is already around with several new features which kadischi
doesn't have. New features will keep on popping. Revisor is simple to
use and installed. There are people who will answer your revisor bug
reports.
kadischi was just a living dead during the last months and during the
last 2 fedora releases we were just doing bug fixing on users'
requests and Jasper was coding from time to time.

But you are conscious that a real "community lead project" (as you
said) should have:
* have enough community contributors
* release often release early (under the fedora umbrella)
* be ambitious and have a concrete (perhaps long term) goal
* (the list goes on)
The kadischi project doesn't have any of these, sadly. If you were on
this list since december, you should already guess why there are
revisor&friends though kadischi was present.

As the guy who first sponsored Kadischi as a Summer of Code project, I'd
like to thank all of the people who worked on Kadischi to make it as good
as it was.
Sometimes a project can be successful not just from a code perspective,
but from what it leads to. Kadischi was the first draft of Live CD tools,
and was directly responsible for (a) the realization that we *badly
needed* some help from Red Hat hands; and (b) the notion that the Live CD
should be a turnkey experience, which led directly to Revisor.
Without Kadischi, and the people who worked on it, none of the rest would
have happened. We wouldn't have a LiveCD creator, and we wouldn't have a
variety of Fedora 7 LiveCDs, and we wouldn't have Revisor.
From my perspective, Kadischi was a dramatic success. But now
there's a
codebase that's better integrated into the whole Fedora build
process, and
better maintained by people who can devote a lot of time to it. So the
new codebase will be what lives on. That's how open source is supposed to
work, isn't it?

discussed on this list for Fedora, after proving a viable concept in OLPC
land.

all we do is what livecd-tools does, we just provide the packageSack and
transaction info -yum instance- after they have been created and
populated with info the user provided, and work around some of the
issues that not being able to "import livecd-creator" has.

Which I don't mean to indicate is any small feat (: Putting an easy to use
graphical face on livecd-tools is indeed great work and a boon for users.
