Hi All,
I have a cherried out Live USB I use at customer sites. It gives me a bad time booting on some systems, especially ones with Supermicro motherboards. HP always boots.
Is there a way I can update the boot portion on the stick with the latest utilities to see if that helps? Or, do I have to wipe and start over?
And, to do a back up in case things go wrong, can I use "dd" to backup and restore?
Many thanks, -T
Hey Todd. My name is Michael, and I have a lot of experience dealing with Supermicro hardware and the LiveCD as a combination. I'm not an authority on LiveCD creation or maintenance, but I do have some tricks. What's the specific error you're getting?
I've used DD to copy a livecd to a USB stick many times, so I would say it's probably fine to back it up that way. You may want to test it on a clean separate USB stick first.

Hi Michael,
I am a system builder. I almost exclusively use Supermicro motherboards.
What typically happens is that I get the boot countdown screen, then I get a flashing cursor in the upper right.
I have been through this with Supermicro several times. They have come up with a new bios that will work, but you must have Legacy USB support enabled. Last I asked, they were still working on it.
And, I will not upgrade a BIOS on a working system -- only on a new system with nothing installed on it. I have had too many motherboards get hosed by upgrading BIOS'es.
I think the big problem here is that Supermicro Support does not have any Linux test stations. And, they do not want me to send them a test stick. (I presume because they think I will send them an infection. Which makes no sense. Just unplug your SATA connectors from your hard drives before boot off a foreign stick.)
Of interest, I have a DOS 6.22 Live USB disk that I use to upgrade BIOS'es with. It boots off of anything and everything.
