Fifteen-year anniversary

Hello, This November will be the fifteenth anniversary of the Fedora project. Would it be appropriate to mark this event with an article on the magazine, or is that more community blog content? I thought it might be fun to provide people with a Fedora Core 1 libvirt image that they could boot up and see what Fedora was like in the beginning. Thoughts? Link

Article Pitch, Press Ready

Hello: I am in the process of printing my first actual physical book that isn't an ebook. I'm using LibreOffice, FocusWriter and the GIMP mostly on Fedora machines in the pursuit of this goal. Currently we have a test plate and the intent is to print up some test impressions this weekend. The manuscript (short science fiction piece) is pretty much finished other than for some images still being worked on. The plan was/is to produce a pdf with images embedded which will be sent to BoxCar press who will produce a polymer plate from it. This plate gets adhered to a proprietory base they make and locked into the chase of an old Craftsmen platen press bolted to the dining room table. At that point, its old-school ink and paper make-ready and printing by pulling a lever for each impression (my press is hand-operated). Once printed, its time for bindery operations... its looking likely that I will be having that done by a book binder. Its been quite a journey so far, and per some off-list conversations I've had with Oliver Guitierez (sorry if I misspelled your name Oliver) I thought that maybe it might make an interesting article for Fedora Magazine. It would probably end up being a three-part article, and as it is very much visual, the book having illustrations in it, there would probably be quite a few images, some screenshots, i.e.: turning a photograph into a line drawing using GIMP, and some photographs showing the press and the other hardware being used. Does this sound like an article that would be of interest? Thanks, Dale

About feedback/comment notices

As far as I can tell, comments on blog posts should go to authors correctly now. However, as of this moment moderator comments all get funneled to the fedoramagazine-tips list. That process is kind of noisy, and not really conducive to doing useful things. I'd suggest we have moderation notices either go to a group membership alias (editors), or just discard them. I'm not sure whether we can do this, though, and still have feedback email go to a different destination address. Any ideas? -- Paul

I'm Stuart Gathman, a Fedora packager and user. Some resume things are here: http://gathman.org/vitae Now that dnf system-upgrade is the preferred way to upgrade, I wanted to share how to use LVM to do so with a better fallback (in case something goes south) than "restore from backup". I wrote a draft. I don't quite like it yet - there are too many steps. The "copy snapshot of rootfs to new lv" could be automated (but isn't yet). [PITCH] Animations in Blender

Hey everyone, I'd like to share my experience of making simple animations in Blender and exporting a video out of it. I'm not a 3D designer, so please don't expect making beautiful things. But I can definitely promise things that move — even though they might be a little ugly. For example, I've made this video in Blender: https://youtu.be/5VQljp1p_ok I would cover: * basics of the Blender UI * making simple shapes in Blender * keyframes — the basic concept of animation in Blender * making an actual animated scene * exporting a video I'm not sure if this would be one article or a series, I would need to start writing and see what happens. So this could be one article, or a short series. How do you like my idea? Cheers! May 2018 = Best month ever!

Congratulations, Magaziners... May 2018 was our best month EVER on the Magazine. Of course it was a release month with Fedora 28 releasing on May 1, 2018, and several related articles following that news. For comparison: Fedora 26 --> Jul 2017 --> 366,601 pageviews Fedora 27 --> Nov 2017 --> 389,554 pageviews Fedora 28 --> May 2018 --> 400,598 pageviews It's true this is only a modest increase, and there's a bit of unwanted "flattening out" to the curve. However, my semi-educated guess is this is due to a few problems: * The release article timing was botched due to unwanted links in the announcement text, which forced us to publish other articles waiting in the wings. In the future we should make sure to eliminate errant links like that, so we can space out views over time. * Quite a few articles in May, including the release related articles, did not use the special "" tag that incents RSS readers to come to the site to view the whole article. We need to use this tag in *every* article. With these fixes, my bet is we would have seen closer to 415K-425K pageviews, showing an accelerating release-to-release curve. However, 400,000 views in a month is nothing to sneeze at! Let's keep striving. -- Paul W.
