Hi,
I recently pitched an article for JMC on Fedora 29. It has been published and I notice now that the images quite small [1]. Is there anything I can do to edit them to support a zoomed-in version? The original images should be 1920x1080.

Regards,
Yes -- you can upload them in their original size, and when you add them to the article, use a smaller thumbnail. WordPress automatically handles creating/scaling those thumbnails for you and the links to full size.

Ah I see now in a test draft, thanks! Is there a way to edit my post that is already published?

I had it wrong -- in the right side where the settings appear for a block, one needs to set "link --> Media file" to have the automatic thumbnail link to the full size. I've fixed this in your article.
