30 minutes presentation
by Chitlesh GOORAH
Hai there,
These days, Im kinda busy, It might happen I wont be present for
tomorrow's meeting.
Tomorrow, I have a 30 minutes presentation to first year undergraduate
kids at my university.
Just to let you know :)
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ChitleshGoorah/LicenseESA
My impress presentation is uploaded there :)
The theme (For me) will be LIVE CDs, the overall topic is "opensource and you"
I built a livecd, added gcc and man pages as my lecturer wished.
There will be 12 copies of this livecd available which will be
launched on our lab's computers. Eventually if someone wants to have a
copy, will have one too.
The presentations will be held in a computer lab which can accommodate
about 25-30 humans.
Afterwards, there might be a chance the afterwards my uni will give my
access to host my livecds :)
but that's only words for the moment, we'll see afterwards.
for the package list, the wiki doesn't seem to like the list b'coz it
threw python exception over me. Ill see afterwards to add it again.
tchung you may move the wiki page
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ChitleshGoorah/LicenseESA to the
Marketing/**
to a proper place but do leave a forward at ChitleshGoorah/LicenseESA please.
thanks
Ive added it this little event to FedoraEvents;
Cheers,

Rethinking the Freemedia problem
by Greg DeKoenigsberg
Just free thinking here. Stop me if I'm an idiot. :)
We've clearly got LOTS of demand. What we need is more participants.
BUT... we don't want to burden participants like we've burdened poor
Thomas. :)
Maybe we need more structure and tools to scale participation -- and a way
to "guarantee" response times. So let me bounce this structure off you:
1. THE RECRUITER PAGE.
Maybe we make a real easy webpage that says something like this:
Join Up! Lots of messaging here about how you're sharing the fun!
Tell us:
* Name and email;
* Where you live;
* Whether you prefer to send CDs, DVDs, or both;
* Where you're willing to send CDs/DVDs;
* How many per week you're willing to send.
2. THE INPUT QUEUE.
Same as what we have now, except the request goes into a simple database
that tracks address, date of request, and who's handling it, if anyone.
3. THE REQUEST ENGINE.
Basically, it goes through and matches volunteers to requests -- at a rate
that precisely matches the volunteer's desire to help. If someone can
send one DVD / set of CDs a week, that's exactly what we ask them to send.
4. THE BACKLOG.
We show the backlog on a webpage, and given the number of requests we
have, we estimate a delivery time for every single CD/DVD request we have
in the queue.
5. THE RATING. :)
Once someone promises to send CDs/DVDs to someone, we need a way to find
out if it happened. Actually, what we *really* need is a way to find out
if it *didn't* happen. Maybe an "Oops!" counter. If someone accumulates
a few Oopses, they'll get a gentle reminder that they made a promise. If
they accumulate a bunch of Oopses, they're dropped from the rotation.
=====
So. Thoughts?
There's some work here, but for a reasonably competent web programmer...
it's really not tough. Just requires someone with hands and time. :)
Might also be nice to donate such an application to the community at
large...

LAN Welche
by Chitlesh GOORAH
Hai there :)
Well, Im invited to give a speech on free software/opensource to about
60 18-years old kids on 22-23 april 2006
http://www.teamfr.com/lanwelche/
Of course, a village nearby Strasbourg, France
Place: Salle des loisirs de Lapoutroie (next to the church)
This event is about video games on lan, CounterStrike 1.6 (5 vs 5) and
Warcraft 3 (1 vs 1)
Each participant needs to subscribe for a 7 € ticket which includes.
- a sandwich, a drink for one euro
- unlimited coffee, just to keep the rhythme
- Free Parking
- and much more.
This event is organised by my friends, who happen to be those to whom
I've introduced Fedora :)
This explains my invitation :)
So about my speech :)
My speech will be mostly on opensource software equivalent to
propriety softs. Sure, of course more than once the word "fedora" will
come out of my mouth.
Afterwards those little geeks will eventually have time to ask me
questions or share their doubts.
Cheers,
Chitlesh GOORAH

New Member introduction
by Karlie Robinson
Good evening, all.
Greg DeKoenigsberg suggested I join this list and introduce myself.
First off, I'm Karlie Robinson. I am the Owner of Webpath Technologies
in Rochester, NY, USA. Our current focus is On-Disk.com and the
Developers Portal at http://portal.on-disk.com
What makes On-Disk.com different from the countless other FOSS-on-a-disc
vendors, is that we want to be a vehicle for independent software and
digital media developers. Allowing them to fund their projects when a
user orders a CD/DVD with their release.
I won't trouble the list with all the details since most of them can be
found on our websites. But, please feel free to email me with any
questions you may have. I'm happy to answer them.
Now to the reason Greg asked me to write...
Background - On-Disk.com will do custom downloads to disc and we get
requests for Fedora. So I asked Greg about listing with us via the
portal. Due to the vow never to monetize Fedora, listing with us
doesn't really work.
Since C5 was released, the requests for custom burns warrants adding
Fedora to our catalog (which isn't done yet).
Today while I was digging in the wiki for fodder for the listing, I came
across the FreeMedia project and had an idea.
Below is the email I sent to Greg for you to comment upon. (FYI, Todd
is my husband/business partner/*nix monkey)
I look forward to talking with you,
Karlie Robinson

Traditionally, we haven't done updates to the fedora-release package to
avoid some potential confusion/snafus. It's something we could consider
doing I guess.
