Status of the picture book
by Ian Weller
stabus report/slight rant time now -- it looks long but please read :)
1) Blocking on release forms. I'm assured RH Legal is working on it. In
the meantime if you're willing to take photos of people and have
their contact information so you can hunt them down with a New and
Improved Release Form then there's no reason stopping you; you just
can't upload them to the wiki yet.
2) As far as I'm concerned we'll be using Lightning Source Inc. (LSI)
for publishing. It'll be on-demand, woo. We've yet to make a decision
on whether to print color or grayscale pages, and what page size we
want (I think I'm leaning towards 8.5" square). Any objectors should
reply to this email.
3) I have no clue how we're getting initial funding. I made some
original contacts with gregdek and spevack but I'm so confused about
it. Somebody who knows what they're talking about with relation to
this (community architecture, etc) please reply to this message or to
me personally.
4) The original plan of publishing four of these books at the very start
seems to be getting... less and less feasible per day. Right now I'm
at the idea of publishing one, 80-page book and selling that. We can
get at least 200 photos in there (more than one per page).
Understanding that we got about 20 or so photos from the wonderful Mo
Duffy at FUDConF11, this will make the target much more feasible.
5) We've got a great number of volunteers on our wiki page[1] but we
could still use more regional photographers. Keep in mind that if you
own a nice camera (generally a D-SLR) and you might have extra time
we'd absolutely love you to volunteer as a regional photographer.
6) Does anybody know what we do to convert bitmap images to CMYK with
free software?
7) Are there any currently unanswered questions people have?

Intel, Nvidia Kernel Mode-Setting In Fedora 11
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi,
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=NzEwMA
"Enabled by default on Fedora 11 will be Intel kernel mode-setting
(along with the ATI kernel mode-setting that can already be found in
Fedora 10). More on this is also available from the Fedora Wiki. ATI
kernel mode-setting has been enabled since Fedora 10, but in Leonidas
the support will be extended to support KMS on ATI R100/200 hardware.
Kernel mode-setting allows for a nice, flicker-free boot process with
the Plymouth project, fast VT switching, improved suspend and resume
support, and other benefits. Kernel mode-setting is also a prerequisite
for running the Wayland Display Server. "

Self-Introduction: Mike Naughton
by Michael Naughton
Hi all:
My name is Mike Naughton. I'm a criminal defense attorney (associate at
James C. Thomas, P.C.) from Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. I first tried
Linux when I installed Fedora Core 3. I am running Fedora 10 x64 and it
feels very sharp and responsive.
As far as how I can contribute, in my role as a criminal defense
attorney I have a lot of experience with advocacy, community outreach
and working with media. In fact, I have been involved in cases in the
Detroit area that garnered national and local media attention. My
participation required working with attorneys around the country and
media outlets. If you google my name you will see Michigan Supreme
Court and Michigan Court of Appeals briefs I wrote over the summer and
for what case.
I think Fedora and Red Hat have really done a terrific job of creating a
more vibrant community and putting together some really nice resources
online (fedoraproject.org, fedoraforum.org, fedorafaq.org, etc.). I
would like to be more involved in this community. I believe that, for
better or worse, the economy and Vista have really created an
opportunity for people to discover Fedora and be very pleasantly surprised.
I would really like to get more involved in marketing Fedora, especially
to professionals like myself who are solo-practitioners or small
business owners. Fedora really provides all the tools necessary for a
person to build a business right out of the box. In fact, I have been
using Linux in my practice. I use Openoffice.org to prepare
correspondence, motions, orders and other forms of legal writing. I use
Thunderbird with the Lightning plugin to keep track of my calendar. I
listen to music with Rhythmbox, mount NTFS drives, play games (World of
Goo is really incredible and a great example of the traction Linux is
starting to gain) and run the occasional Windows app in Crossover Office.
Admittedly, I would like to see more billable programs for Linux. I
have tried Gnu Cash but I find it a bit cumbersome for simple time
tracking and invoicing. Additionally (like a lot of other people), I'd
like to able to use Adobe programs in Linux. Obviously this is not a
Fedora gripe but an Adobe one. I am confident that as Linux desktop
adoption grows, Adobe will reach out to this market and provide
products. It already has with Flash and Acrobat. I am also a part-time
web developer and use Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Illustrator. It
would be nice to not have to boot into OS X use these tools.
Thanks for reading. I am really excited about joining the marketing
team and making some contributions to the community.

by Jack Aboutboul
Hey Everyone,
This is the early reminder for tomorrow's meeting. This is the last
meeting we will have at this time, as we will switch over to Tuesday
nights at 21.00UTC, since that seems to be more convenient for us all.
Tomorrow is as scheduled, continue to work on the calendar. Now that
everything is solidified, we will work mostly on figuring out who is
doing what for F11.
See you tomorrow,
Jack
