Marketing Trac - A little introduction!
by Robyn Bergeron
Greetings Friends -
I figured that since I just sent out a Call for help on Limesurvey and
referenced Trac... I should introduce everyone to Trac, and more
specifically, the fact that we actually really do have a Marketing
Trac instance, and how to find it, and use it.
Some of you may already be familiar with Trac, and others may not be;
it is, in a nutshell, a ticketing system where tasks or "bugs" can be
assigned to team members. The tickets then can be prioritized (high
priority / needs to be fixed now, low-priority, etc.), tickets can be
assigned to certain projects or larger tasks (F13, Fedora Insight,
Fudcon, Limesurvey, etc.). Tickets can be assigned to willing owners,
or reassigned in the event that a team member can no longer take on
the task.
Trac is important because it helps us have a centralized place where
tasks - or even things like "good ideas we'll get to someday" - are
being tracked, progress can be monitored, and most importantly - we
don't forget anything. We have a great, diverse team with TONS of
ideas - and the last thing we want to have happen is to have those
great ideas get lost in the shuffle. The other awesome thing about
Trac is that it gives us a sense of accomplishment; I'm sure we've all
had the day where we've said, I feel like I've been doing things, but
what have I finished? As a team, this allows us to go back at the end
of each release cycle and definitively say - THIS is what we've
accomplished! - and in the future, look at how many more people we
have who are contributing and accomplishing a larger number of tasks
than the previous cycle. It also does nice things like send email when
you've been assigned tasks, or if you have submitted a ticket - will
send you an email notifying you if the ticket has been modified in
some way, such as changed to fixed, or has been assigned to a new
owner, etc.
I encourage everyone to check out Marketing's Trac instance. I'd like
to add that you need to LOG IN to Trac to do things like submitting or
modifying tickets - but not for viewing tickets. Marketing's Trac
instance uses FAS for logging in (someone, correct me here if I'm
wrong, but I believe that is the case) - so it should be the same
password you would use to log into the Fedora wiki to make edits.
Here are a couple of things of interest to look at to help you get
familiarized:
https://fedorahosted.org/marketing-team/ <--- front-end of Trac.
There is a small bar near the top of the page - it contains clickable
items like "timeline," "view tickets," "roadmap," etc.
https://fedorahosted.org/marketing-team/report <--- a list of varying
reports where you can see Trac tickets in many ways. You can look at
tickets by filters such as "all tickets," "FUDCon tickets", "All F13
tickets," etc. If you're logged in, you can also view the tickets
that you are currently the owner for.
https://fedorahosted.org/marketing-team/newticket <--- page where you
can submit a new ticket, if you are logged in. Tickets don't have to
be for things that are "broken" - tickets can be for regular marketing
deliverables, brainstormed ideas, major multi-step projects, writing
wiki pages, etc.
I'm actually going to be cleaning up our Trac instance over the next
day or two, making sure completed items have been closed out and that
all the deliverables / task items that were identified at the
Marketing FAD have been entered into Trac. If you volunteered for
ownership of any items at the FAD - you'll probably be getting mails
sent to you from Trac over the next few days. Once everything is IN
Trac, I'll be looking for owners for the remaining tasks - you'll be
seeing list mail about that, as well. :)
Also - I think it would be a great idea to have a Trac SOP for
marketing - how to get to the Marketing Trac, how we use it, the
basics of looking at tickets, creating tickets, closing tickets, etc.
Things like "who do i have to talk to to get additional categories
created," documenting who the current administrators are, etc. would
probably also be helpful for those new to Trac. If anyone is feeling
bold and would like to create their first ticket - this is a great
opportunity. Feel free to assign it to me - and drop a line in
response to this email saying it's been created, and list the ticket
number!
Happy Trac exploring!

Today's Marketing Meeting & some other stuff.
by Nelson Marques
Good people,
I won't be attending today's Marketing gathering/reunion/meeting
because I will be attending a meeting with EMA (Municipal Stadium of
Aveiro) Administration regarding a project that is a joint venture
between my school and the city hall. This is important not only for me,
for also for the unborn Fedora Portuguese Community and there is some
stuff I need from those people, and once I start wiki'ing this "evil
plan" of mine there is a lot that can happen.
I'm also meeting the Administration of my Institute in 20 minutes, this
got me by surprise, but I would consider this a very good thing. This
meeting is about the Event I'm planning and that's to decide how they
are going to get involved (only infra-structure, or more), obviously I
have some weird stuff going on also on the background with the City
Hall, so that despite of their decisions I don't run out of options and
off course to have some extra leverage on my side.
I'm shouldering rifle, pike and saber and now it's time for me to meet
them heads on. Whish me luck.

PS: Strange orgasmic blogging on planet, a bit out of scope and maybe
psycho minded, but thats just me :)

"There's a SOP for that."

From the channel. Anyone feel like making a video? ;)
19:12 < rbergeron> but there's also no like... "if you want to organize
a fudcon and you've never attended... here's what to REALLY expect / want"
19:13 < ke4qqq> mchua wrote a sop for that
19:13 < mchua> It's like the Apple commercial. "There's a SOP for that."
19:13 < ke4qqq> mchua: we should do a commercial like that!!!!!
19:15 < mchua> ke4qqq: "Want to learn how to get a press release out
about your FOSS project? Make a remix for your college? Run a conference
using only free and open tools? There's a SOP for that."
19:15 < ke4qqq> mchua: yes - we need to run with that

Yeah, I wonder how that got assigned to Matthias. Every other release
in pkgdb shows it as me, and I'm pretty sure I haven't ever tried
assigning it to anyone other than in marketing.
Max, is there a better person to maintain this? I'm okay with co-owing
and helping out the new maintainer, but I probably shouldn't be the
primary owner.
For the time being though, I can make the change if this is what
marketing's agreed on.
Let me know.

back
by Nelson Marques
Hi all,
Due to some personal issues and ISP swap I've been a bit more distant in the
past two weeks.
I'm back. Currently I'm working full time on my event, this goes through a lot,
making presentations, exploring new actions that can be done and eventually I'm
following Rodrigo's idea of establishing a national Fedora Community.
I've also worked a bit my wiki skills and during the next days I'm going to
finish the website for the event, get the domain running and sort some stuff
out. Once it's announced and on track, I'm planning to go full time on wiki and
deploy all the information on the swat. Within the next two months that's
something that needs to be finished.
Basically, I'm back :)

press adress
by wonderer
hy there,
does anybody know who gets mails send to press(a)fp.o ?! I think right now
it is forward to someone.
If possible we should here have some kind of Mailinglist (anybody can
send to it, 3-5 people should send-back in behalf of that mailadress;
answers should always go in cc to the list back) so we all know what is
going on for PR work and we all can react or put infos in.
What do you think?

Hi Rashadul and FWN Team --
The beats are usually submitted by sometime before about 18:00 UTC on
Mondays, and usually what beat writers do is if they can't get a beat in
by then, we skip that week and hold for the following week.
As of right now, we only have two beats in, Planet and Security Advisories.
Are there other writers who also need more time? Larry, Adam W.,
Neville, Ryan, what are your plans for this issue? We have a couple
choices:
1) Change FWN release date to be Tuesday or Wednesday this week only
2) Change FWN release date to be Tuesday or Wednesday permanently, to
give people more time at the beginning of the week to complete their beats
3) Skip this next issue if we do not have enough content to warrant an issue
4) Move to a biweekly format (once every two weeks), coming out on
either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday
I'd suggest that I have noted a couple trends over the past year or so:
1) some writers are finding it hard to sustain a weekly time commitment
to produce a beat
2) it is hard to attract new beat writers because of the time commitment
3) there is often not enough content in some beats to warrant a weekly beat
I am also cross-posting this to the Marketing list as folks there might
have some useful ideas. What would be the impact, do you think, of FWN
moving to a bi-weekly frequency? Thanks for everyone's thoughts!
