Self-Introduction: Jeffery Abbott
by Jeff Abbott
Saludos de New Mexico!
My name is Jeffery Abbott (Jeff for short) and I live in the state of New
Mexico in the United States of America. My FAS username is jdabbott5100 and
my IRC alias will be #jdabbott5100 (although I have yet to sign on yet).
I learned about the Fedora Marketing team by reading the *How do you *
*Fedora?* feature on the Fedora website, in which one of contributors
proclaimed
to love the Fedora community. Moved by my own appreciation of Fedora, I too
have decided to join and contribute in any way I can. This will be the
first Open Source project of which I've officially sought to be a part of.
My Skills, which I hope to utilize in Fedora Marketing, include:
- Promotions – I was the assistant director of Circulation and Audience
Development for the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper for several years in
which I oversaw several promotions to help expand readership.
- Writing – I have a bachelors of arts in Literature, with a concentration
in Spanish and Latin American literature. I've had several columns in
English and articles translated to/from Spanish published in the Santa Fe
New Mexican Newspaper. My first writing project out of college was with a
small newspaper in Quito, Ecuador where I worked as an intern for several
months.
- Graphic Design – My three go-to programs are GIMP, Inkscape and Scribus
(a great program I don't think is ever mentioned enough). I've created
advertisements and promotional materials for both print and web.
- Web Design – I am proficient in HTML/CSS. I've also been an avid user
of the Drupal Content Management System since 2011.
Currently I work for the Special Education Department for Santa Fe Public
Schools as a Coordinator for Parent and Educator Resources. I am incredibly
fortunate to be put in a position to support students, teachers and
families of students who have special needs. Personally, I have a son who
was born with Special Needs, something which has opened my eyes, I feel, to
the incredible wonder that it
is to be a sentient human being. In using Fedora and the vast array of Open
Source offerings, at work I'm known as the guy capable of doing a lot with
little. My heart often breaks when I see such institutions like public
schools pay so much money for the licensing of software of which I know
there is a perfectly good open source alternative. My chief interest in
joining the Fedora Marketing Team is to promote Fedora as a viable
alternative for nonprofits and public institutions. I currently use Fedora
on an eight year old laptop that was discarded and reported to be “old and
broken” but that worked superbly once I put a Fedora Spin of LXDE on it.
I've also spent time with my son navigating the joys of *Sugar on a Stick*.
Being a father of a child with special needs, a husband to my beautiful
wife Katia, and a coordinator in the public schools often means I can be a
bit busy. I may not be the first to respond to collaboration initiatives
but that doesn't mean I won't be paying attention. I'll gladly chime in and
contribute whenever possible! :)
Thanks so much for the opportunity and please consider including me on your
marketing team!
Kindest regards,
--

Self-Introduction: Michael Downey
by Michael Downey
Hi, my name is Michael Downey and I live in the USA (soon moving to Portland, Oregon, UTC-8). My Fedora Account System (FAS) username is downey, and my IRC nick is also downey.
I've worked in free & open source software in the past. Most recently, I was the director of community for OpenMRS, an open source electronic medical record system. I'm currently serving on the steering committee for LibreHealth, a new umbrella organization just getting started for open source Health IT projects.
Recently I've had some extra time on my hands and have been working to get up to speed to contribute to a few FOSS projects that I really care about. I learned about the Fedora Marketing team through the wiki, and thought I might be able to help out. I've done quite a bit of marketing work for OpenMRS in the past, and hope that I can add some experience to help Fedora, since I've been a user for many years now. Some of my experience includes blogging & content strategy, social media strategy, advertising, graphic design for online & print media, web design, community leadership/management, etc. I've already done one blog post for Magazine which is up at https://fedoramagazine.org/the-ultimate-fedora-t-shirt/.
As a long-time Fedora user, I hope to do what I can to help spread the word about one of my favorite FOSS projects. People have done a great job so far, but there are still millions of people to get involved, and lots of the planet still un-informed! :-)
One thing that crossed my mind today was getting the @Fedora account on Twitter to have verified status. I got this for the @OpenMRS account and Twitter just announced a streamlined process yesterday at https://blog.twitter.com/2016/announcing-an-application-process-for-verif.... What do others think?
Looking forward to learning more and helping more!
Michael

Social media for Flock
by Paul W. Frields
A couple people noted in the Magazine meeting that last year's Flock
was a little spammy in use of Twitter/social media. Would it make
sense to use a different account for "this talk is now on" type
things, and just have the @fedora account stay clear other than to
point people to that account if interested?
Other thoughts welcome.

Marketing-trac: #229: Shared, secure password distribution
by Marketing Team
#229: Shared, secure password distribution
---------------------------------+-------------------------
Reporter: jflory7 | Owner:
Type: enhancement | Status: new
Priority: normal | Milestone: Fedora 24
Component: Internal operations | Severity: not urgent
Keywords: meeting | Blocked By:
Blocking: |
---------------------------------+-------------------------
= Problem =
In
[https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/marketing@lists.fedoraproje...
previous discussions], we had talked about secure password management and
distribution to safely and securely distribute confidential information
such as passwords for social media accounts or other Fedora-related,
shared accounts.
We need a system that can handle having multiple "caretakers" that manage
all the passwords, user accounts that can individually access certain
accounts / passwords, have some kind of convenient way to regenerate
passwords if a user is removed or has their privileges changed.
= Analysis =
When we discussed this originally, we decided to approach the
Infrastructure team to get their feedback / ideas on such an idea about
how to manage this. We also wanted to answer questions such as…
* How many people will need access to the passwords?
* How much data would be stored (e.g. how many passwords, for what
services, is it small-scale or large-scale, etc.)?
* How often will access to a password be granted?
* How often will access to a password be revoked?
= Enhancement Recommendation =
=== pass ===
The Infrastructure team originally proposed for us to consider using
[https://www.passwordstore.org/ pass], a Unix command line password
management utility. Pass uses GPG keys to encrypt passwords and can
synchronize them via git.
'''Advantages'''
* Lightweight, easy to maintain (theoretically)
* Uses tried and trusted tech to secure passwords (GPG)
* Little overhead to maintain a secure repository within Fedora's
Infrastructure
'''Disadvantages'''
* No per-user customization (anyone whose GPG key id is added to the
repository has access to all passwords)
* Requires anyone with access to have understanding and reliability to use
GPG as expected
* A compromised key could cause issues if someone who needs access is not
extremely familiar with using GPG.
* Changing passwords in the event of a dropped GPG key means changing ALL
passwords in the entire repository for everyone (no modularity in terms of
a user who should have access to a subset / specific password)
=== Rattic ===
I've never used Rattic or do I know much about it, but it seems like a
more complete solution than pass. I'm going to CC Brian Proffitt to this
ticket in case he can add more context to this discussion.
Eventually, after discussing in a meeting, we'd like to take a vote on
this and bring a formal proposal to the Infrastructure team.

Hey all, special big shout-out to downey for writing this all up and
putting it together! We discussed in the CommOps channel earlier, and
ryanlerch ended up also wanting to do a post for the Magazine, so we

= Problem =
The Fedora Infrastructure team is planning on sunsetting Fedora Hosted
repositories in the coming future (tried finding where this announcement
or discussion originally happened, but had a hard time finding it).
Eventually, the idea is for all projects using Fedora Hosted to migrate to
Pagure. We will be expected / planned to be migrated in the foreseeable
future.
= Analysis =
There are some tools available to assist in migrating Trac to Pagure,
although it is under testing and not yet fully tested. We would need to
check with the Infrastructure team about the status of this tool.
= Enhancement Recommendation =
We have one of two options.
=== Start fresh ===
We could move to Pagure and begin using it today, at the expense of losing
past history / discussions on old tickets.
=== Try the migration tool ===
We could try using the migration tool being developed to move our project
over (since we are only tickets and not a git repository, I imagine this
will be easier to do?).
To be discussed at the next meeting.
