Fedora 11: What do we expect?

Hi,

It´s almost one year, I am with the Fedora community. In this one year, I
met so many great people from Fedora community. I have visited hundreds of
forums, mailing lists. I meet so many people who uses Fedora (also who
doesn´t).  I have learned so many things from them. Some of them are happy
using Fedora and some them are not. And I think, as a community member, it´s
my responsibility to inform you guys about some issues that I think, why
people doesnt like to use Fedora or switching to other distros. And
something, that we need to fix.

1. Need to include RPM Fusion with Fedora 11 default installation (but not
activated, like Fedora test repo or raw hide, as we don´t include
proprietary software). If this is not possible (may be because of some legal
issue), then I´ll say, we need a working GUI solution to install RPM Fusion.
According to RPM Fusion <http://rpmfusion.org/Configuration> they explained
a GUI solution to install the repo, but most of the time, it doesnt work at
all (I myself, tested thousands time, also so many people there has, who
tried, I searched for the solution, everyone give me CLI solution). And
KPackage Kit can´t install it. So we need a solution that will work for
GNOME and KDE both.

2. Need a GUI solution to install nVidia and ATI driver, that will
automatically install the appropriate driver (Ubuntu has a GUI *Hardware
Drivers *options that automatically download and install the driver, also
they have Envy, its another GUI solution)

3. Need a GUI solution to install all kind of proprietary Multimedia codecs
(Ubuntu has ubuntu-restricted-extras, they simply select it from package
manager, and it installs all kind of codecs including JAVA)

4. Need a complete GUI solution to install softwares offline from cache
(ofcourse if it can fix the dependency) or DVD Media.

5. There has a very easy way to install a rpm package from CLI (one single
package, that has not any dependency issue or if it has, it´s possible to
install the package by ignoring it). But from Fedora 9, GUI double click rpm
install doesnt work at all. So, we need a GUI solution of it.

6. Need to add CD/DVD repo with Fedora 11 default installation, so people
can use DVD to install softwares.

7. From /etc/yum.conf we need to edit  keepcache=0 to 1 as default. So
people can use the cache to install software later or to some other PC.

Many of you will say, why we are following Ubuntu? Well, I´ll say, no, we
are not following them. This is the truth, what users want. And many of you
will think, this ideas are stupid, but truth is If this issues we can fix,
for sure, so many people will start using Fedora. My apologies, if I am
wrong anywhere.

Because of legal issue as you stated, Fedora cannot install RPM Fusion 
with default installation. User can do it with Installer.  I haven't 
tried KPackageKit so I presume it is a bug for that application should 
it not be able to install that repository.

Because of Fedora nature of being free and open source, that option is 
not acceptable. RPMFusion already provides those drivers meaning having 
extra GUI  for that purpose is pointless. DeviceKit might provide an 
alternative.

How about simply use yum-downloader command and enable deltarpm?

I pointed out having extra gui for each drivers, codecs are redundant 
and overkill. Fedora 10 has solved most of issues you mentioned and it 
is worth to read documentation about features[1].

What I meant is to install the driver via RPM Fusion ofcourse. All we need

I think, you didn´t get my point. I know, this legal issues. All I want to
say, we have to find a easiest way to install all kind of codecs at once,
that anyone can do it, instead of using codes.

Just I have tried to install amarok from a rpm by double clicking, what I

No, it´s not. Go to Administrator>Software Sources. You will not get any

Yes, delta rpm is coming soon. I am very happy for it.

I read the feature lists several time. Read my reply. Give me solution. I
give this solution to other people, they are waiting for it.

Then it is helpful to explain those users they can directly update 
through installation. The ability to install packages from DVD was 
possible so it is better to submit a bug report on that concern.

No problems here with Gnome. (EU citizen)
Ask rpmfusion about kde bit.

does either, by default.

Don't agree, as updates are frequent, and you already have the dvd from
above.

This can´t be a permanent  solution, we don´t know yet, for next release
we´ll get autoten or not. RPM fusion is officially acceptable from Fedora as
3rd party repo, but autoten is not yet. And moreover there has not any ATI
driver there.

For a new user, it´s very difficult to find out each codecs and install. Why
they will go to trouble as they has easiest way to do this in Ubuntu? So why
they will use Fedora?

I have a rpm of amarok, this package has not any dependency isuues. It can
be install stand alone. Now give me a solution, how can I install this rpm
without touching terminal?

So do you I think, I dont believe in the concept of freedom? I use Fedora. I
love Fedora. I care about it. I also want to see other people to use Fedora.

Please try to understand me. The solution you are giving me, each of this
are very complex, atleast complex for newbie Linux users. If you really want
to see a huge people to use Fedora, we need each of this issues, a easiest
proper solution. Trust me, if we can fix this issues, we will get a huge
people. The issues here I explained each of them, I have got from Fedora
users (past or present) all over the world, they complained.

Frank, very truth. But fact is this not just a numbers of users. This amount
is huge. That´s why today I opened this thread.

And as a FOSS contributor I cant say them to use MS or Apple product. And
they way you are talking. Like,

¨That is what Fedora is about, not a numbers game.
As an Ambassador push the positive
If new-users, don't want to join under the aims\goals of the project.
There is other distros, Microsft Products, and Apple to choose from¨

This way we can´t promote Fedora. We will lose more users.

The goal of fedora isn't to make it super easy for new users to Linux.  
That's ubuntu's job. Fedora aims to be a free, usable OS. I agree with  
some of your points but I don't think they are part of the goals of  
Fedora.

Fedora isn't meant to compete with other operating systems. It aims to  
provide an independent solution to users.

According to Fedora Devel List, I have got some hope about this issues I
have explained. May be soon we will get all the solutions. If not in this
release (Fedora 11), then may be in Fedora 12.

     I think we are attacking the wrong goal.  What people want is
that their OS "Just Works".

     What Fedora really needs to do is find a legal way to make all of
these things "Just Work".  As long as the OS just works, newbies will
love it.

      Most people don't care if their driver came from Nvidia or not,
as long as it just works and gives equal performance.

Agree with you.
The other day I was chatting with a friend & I asked him the reason why not give Open
Source a try?
Then he started telling that, it needs a lot of tweaking & he doesn't wants that
headache.
He wants everything to work out of box. He also said it doesn't matter which OS I use
but it should be able to complete his work as soon as possible.
So the bottom line is People don't care much, they just want it fast like as in
Fast-Food.

Fedora has codec-buddy— which can help users legally obtain codecs
while informing them of the issues.

I don't think helping users break the law is a feature in ubuntu— it's a bug.
