F21 Alpha release announcement

Hey marketing!
As Fedora 21 is coming, the readiness meeting is this week, I'd like
to have release announcement draft written by the meeting, sooner
than later (even there's still some possibility of Alpha delays).

Fedora 21 as it's next, is going to be a bit different to previous
releases, especially with products introduction. We should make sure
release announcement reflects it but on the other hand, I really like
the target audience structure we have now (and it still somehow fits
products).

Working on this, will have something by tomorrow (3 Sept) morning,
unless someone beats me to it.

Silly question: I think it makes sense to have one release announcement
for alpha/beta - but do we want separate release announcements for
cloud, workstation, and server when we get to F21 final?

I think it depends on a couple of things: 

- How long is the result? I suspect we can highlight each in a single announcement,
especially since this is the first time for it all, with a chance to explain what this all
means. 

- Are there outlets/journalists we want to reach out to who would be interested in only
one of them? If that's the case, then perhaps we do craft a version that specifically
calls out that one (but of course also mentions the existence of the rest).

Looking on agenda for tomorrow's Workstation meeting, there's some draft
mentioned. I'll check it with WWG guys as it's probably the most prominent
product for this cycle.

As Ruth said, for F21 I prefer one announcement even for final to explain
what we are doing or link from one document to product specific parts.

It really all depends on how much detail we want. For cloud, for
example, I could see a fair amount of information with even high-level
details about the supported cloud images, Atomic, and so on.

Yes. I would imagine, for instance, that quite a few journalists will
only care about server/cloud and not Workstation. (And a few the other way.)

Let's see how a single announcement plays out for the alpha and if
there's any demand for product-specific announcements.

Workstation guys at today's meeting agreed on having the common release
announcement for Alpha/Beta, so for now we are covered. For final, they
would like to see umbrella Fedora 21 release announcement with links
to individual product specific announcements. I think this a good 
compromise, does not put too much pressure on Alpha/Beta releases,
there's common announcement for all products to explain what products
in F21 are and gives space for product marketing. The only question
is if Cloud/Server wants to join it.

So Fedora 21 Alpha status is go, we will need final announcement on
Monday and then prepare text formatted version for the official 
announcement on Tuesday morning (US time).

Server guys already updated it, Workstation was pinged to update
theirs part (but for Alpha I'd limit it a bit).

Maybe we should put back some of other non Product related changes,
the list is here - https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/21/ChangeSet
MODIFIED changes were ready for Alpha, maybe some other changes are
now ready too but I'm going to do the check for Beta later again.

Another thing I'd mention is, that we are not products only 
distribution. But we have KDE, other spins etc. and explain the
relation (I know it's hard, we as project are still not 100%
sure what the relation is).

Sorry, "put back"? Does that mean we should remove some of them, or...?

Since the alpha announcement is the first one out with "products" maybe
we lead with products and hold off until beta or final to try to broach
this?

Or are we worried that if we don't get this in the alpha announcement,
people will think we're dropping spins? (I'm thinking this may be more
likely, I'll try to work a note in about spins as well.)

See the list, "Some suggestions for Marketing notes for FW 21" but for
me it's more like final material. Too detailed for Alpha but some parts
could be interesting to pick up.

Non native speaker :). I meant we had broad scope of changes in the
announcement, now it aims solely on product related changes.

I was thinking about it same way. On one hand, we are going to introduce
big change and products should be headline for the announcement on the
other hand I expect screaming users if non-product deliverables are not
mentioned at all and we're dropping spins.

My understanding was those notes were intended for GA.  I believe the
Workstation group already added brief content for the Alpha notes.
I'd requested that in a previous meeting and thread and there were
some edits as a result.  I'll double check today.

As part of the Fedora.next initiative, Fedora 21 will boast three 
products: cloud, server, and workstation.



=== Fedora 21 Base ===

Each of the products will build on the "base" set of packages for

==== Fedora Atomic Host ====

In early April, Red Hat announced Project Atomic, an effort to provide

host for Fedora, which includes a minimal set of packages and an image 
composed with rpm-ostree.

While using the same RPMs as other Fedora offerings, the Atomic host 
will allow users to roll back updates (if necessary) as one atomic unit 
-- making update management much easier.

For users and organizations looking to run Docker containers, the Atomic 
host will be ideal.

The Fedora Server product is a common base platform that is meant to run 
featured application stacks, which are produced, tested, and distributed 
by the Server Working Group. Want to use Fedora as a Web server, file

==== Fedora Server Management Features ====

The Fedora Server product introduces new Server management features 
aimed at making it easier to install discrete infrastructure services.

* Rolekit is a Role deployment and management toolkit that provides a 
consistent interface to administrators to install and configure all the

or servers. It is accessible remotely via a web browser.

* OpenLMI is a remote management system built atop DMTF-CIM. It can be 
used for scripting management functions across many machines as well as

As part of the server role offerings available for Fedora 21, the server

organizational structure and internal division of responsibility doesn't
seem right for a product release announcement.

From the announcement: Base is not a full product intended for use on
its own, but to be kept as a small, stable platform for other products
to build on.

This is the alpha announcement, not final. It seems appropriate to me to
mention this sort of thing in the alpha + beta announcements given the
audience is much smaller and more attuned to these things.

This is kind of picky, but... can we convert from mediawikito
either something either just plain text or more like markdown? I find the
subheadings with different numbers of equal signs really hard to comprehend.

  pandoc --reference-links -f mediawiki -t plain

does okay, but it's kind of too bad that you can't set --base-header-level=0
(because 'plain' only does two levels and one is wasted on the title.)

Final version attached. CC'ed Dennis and Kevin, as releng do the Alpha
announcement. Unfortunately I won't be available at the release time as
I have my doctor appointment scheduled for a month - they do not follow
