Can we get @fedora at identi.ca?  The micro blog seems to have died out
a couple of releases ago and the current owner might be willing to give
it up.  I would prefer an identi.ca account be the primary one with
messages rebroadcasted to the Twitter account and Facebook group.

I've started something some days ago:

The idea behind this is to point a document for users who want to support us
in an anonymously way, how?

Going after the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) concepts, there are two
things that are awesome, one of them is that the number of links of the web
contributes to this concept (at least on google). The higher the number the
links you have on the internet to your website, it will improve page
ranking.

So if everyone has a link on their blogs it will benefict the project by
providing us a higher rank in google index.

I'm also including on that document other key factors like:

* the importance of ALT descriptions on SEO;
* keyword density;
* how to use properly images and what to code on ALT so we get results on
SEO.
* some basic concepts around 'spider diffusion'.

The blogging part and some other parts probably would qualify for htis. Feel
free to re-use them if you believe they might fit your needs here also.

I have more the question "why should we
have this?"
because one of your foundations is "friends" which implys that you have
contact to one another ... in person! No anonymity is needed here.
Also there are several other problems with anonymity in consens of
marketing so we should not use this.

I think this are lets say outdated believing that are
in the SEO scene
;-) because it will not work with SWOT, because it is not measurable. I
think with good prepared and placed marketing we can accomplish much
more as with quick & dirty "guerrilla marketing strategies". I do not
think that THAT is the fedora-way. I say not that I'm against it, but it
is the wrong way to want to implement it so globally. For e.g. a single
campaign it CAN be a tool, shure.
I think it would be much better to explain the project to others then
simply say "you can support us. klick here. do that. all is fine".

I don't really see how adding a link to your blog is supporting it
anonymously, surely that's publicising that you want to support the
project? :-)

Perhaps what we should be looking into is creating something like
http://www.spreadfirefox.com/ which is an extremely effective tool for
them.

Anonymous because I might not want to get involved in Fedora directly, but I
can still support the Project's goals and help without giving my face for
it.

According to some older information that you can search on the list, someone
placed up that only around 10% of the people who use Fedora contribute
activelly to the Project. Why don't the other 90% do? Giving 'face' has been
talked as one of the reasons, as starting up ramps. So it does make all
sense to me to approach it as 'anonymous' because thats one of the reasons
pointed. Some people might not want to give face... but they can still help.

As for the rest, isn't there a SEO project on-going? This helps, having a
higher number of links pointing to the project page. Someone who knows the
Google ways can probably confirm the relevance of this in therms of ranking,
not just keyword density.

There are a few ways to think about that other 90%.

The traditional advertising way is to appeal to them.  The more you
have, the more they spend on your products.

But what we have is a community.  It is one of many, many important
communities in the world.  Everyone who is involved in each community
cannot contribute to every community they are in.  In some communities
they have to be part of the consumers, part of the wide user base who
are part of the "greater meaning."  It is not reasonable, possible, or
sustainable to expect all of them to contribute.

Rather than looking to grow our project to 100%, we could be thinking
about helping enough people come fresh in to the project so that we i)
don't burn out the people here, and ii) we can grow at a sustainable
rate.

By helping people who are consumers become participants, the people
currently interested in becoming contributors are more naturally
attracted from that group.

Does this difference make sense?

 Karsten,

  It does make sense, and it's actually prettty accurate, though there are a
couple of things I can't actually understand, which I will need more time to
redifine some concepts and see if they match according to what is on this
document. I will hold this 'reply' for a bit more of time because due to the
nature of the contents you presented, a normal superficial reply would not
be honoring your work.

  There's a couple of things I can learn here, and I pretend to do it ;)
soon.

Because in many ways people do not want to get involved or give face (ain't
this one of your problems?! NO?!), but yeah they can still help. They can
still help by going anonymous and provide a link.
On google for example, search for string: link:fedoraproject.org

Reports 2580 links to fedoraproject.org. The higher the number of links the
higher will be the visibility on google. It's one of the factors for page
ranking. Like someone said before, only about 10% of the people who use
Fedora are directly involved on the project.... this is for the other 90%
which have chosen not to contribute directly. Don't see any harm in this. If
they link us on their blog, they can for sure help us at least with google
ranking... Don't see any anti-Fedora on it.

The more frequent the pages are updated, the more relevance google gives to
them in ranking therms (ranking is not only made of keyword density), which
actually makes it a very potent tool to explore at the cost of a link.

And besides why not asking this to people, if we have lots of stuff that can
be wiselly used from Marketing Collateral ?

Wouldn't it be nice also to highlight it and ask people to use it?

Sorry but I don't see any harm in promoting amongst Fedora enthusiasts to
link to the project and why. It does sound reasonable to me. And if we can
tell them a couple of useful information on how it works... I see no harm or
any obscure reasons for not doing it.

 SWOT and SEO ? I don't quite realize what you mean. I don't flavour
Guerrila strategies in Fedora or any other places in which it involved
digital diffusion of information for one single purpose, I usually fight
them, things like spam, adds.... If you mean social networks, I tottally
back you up in making usage of them.

There is a difference between spending our resources on growing a
culture of fanboys, and growing a culture of contributors.  We can
encourage people to show support for the Fedora Project without
expending a great deal of effort *pursuing* them to do that.

If a wiki page allows people with no intention of contributing to
create helpful page ranking for Fedora, I see no problem with creating
it.  I would definitely not want to spend a large amount of time
strategizing about how to do so when the return on investment is
simple page ranking.

There's a saying on my blog that is really meaningful to me.  I don't
always measure up to it, but I try to, and I hope Fedora does as well:
"Esse quam videri," which means "to be, rather than to seem to be."

What's most important to me as FPL is that Fedora have a wonderful,
growing community of contributors actually doing great things for free
software -- not just to *seem* like it is because we have a lot of
people talking about it.
